Sripad Ajita Krishna Prabhu Attains Dust of Sri Dham

(Editorial—Sri Gaudiya Darshan, Year 14; Volume 2, Issue 4; 19 September 1971)

On Wednesday, 30 June, a very special servitor of our holy Sri Math – Sri Gurupadpadma’s exclusive, one-pointed greatest servitor, who always bore a smile on his face, Sripad Ajita Krishna Brahmachari Seva-Saurabha Prabhu – suddenly left for his own abode, plunging us all into an ocean of separation. He never in his life had any enemies, he was bold, enthusiastic, resolute, humble, devoted to impossible vows, a tireless worker and a one-pointed servitor of his guru – it is painful to even imagine today that this Sripad Seva-Saurabha Prabhu is outwardly not among us anymore. Be it residents of the temple, householders, sannyasis, villagers, and even all those who knew him or did not even know him – everybody was equally attracted to his extraordinary qualities and sweetest behaviour. So, everybody is now heart-broken and benumbed due to separation from him.

His eagerness for service was so unusual and vast that if all servitors at Sri Math could just observe him to make up for the outer cover of their own attempts of service, they would easily, and with relief, gain much encouragement in their own discharge of service. Whether during the parikrama of Sri Nabadwip Dham, during the parikrama of Sri Vrindavan, Dvaraka, Mayapuri (Haridwar), Ayodhya, etc. or during the parikrama of Sri Kedar-Badarikasram – everywhere his service and company were absolutely indispensable. In the garland of his service and vows, there was no place for even a speck of rest. That is why nobody ever saw him rest on his bed amidst all his long-term, colossal, labor-intensive service. Such was his enthusiasm for service. He was an exemplary servitor who was devoted to his service and vows twenty-four hours a day.

As of today (1971), Sripad Ajita Krishna Prabhu joined Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math in Nabadwip almost twenty years ago. Prior to that, he had travelled to many temples in search of spiritual benefit but was not able to find satisfaction anywhere. Then, by the wish of a veteran servitor of Sri Gaudiya Math Sriyukta Satyacharan Ghatak Mahasaya, who acted as his vartma-pradarsak (mediator), he was brought to the holy lotus feet of the presiding guardian of our Sri Math, supremely worshippable Parivrajak-acharya-varya Om Vishnupad Sri Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj, and after taking the first and second initiations from him, he dedicated himself wholesale, and with a content feeling, to the service of his guru.

In his previous ashram, his name was Sri Adhirachandra Majumadar. His only bondage was his holy mother. (She also later accepted initiation from Sri Gurupadpadma.) As there was nobody to look after her, he stayed externally as a householder as long as she was alive, but, despite that, he never showed any slack in his service to Sri Guru-Gauranga. At that time, he worked for Bengal Immunity Co. Ltd., and everybody knew his good name and respected him. Owing to his constant hard work, the company elected him a Selected Member of the Watch Committee – not only that, when he resigned from work after his mother’s demise and, submitting everything at the holy feet of his Sri Guru, accepted an eternal service life at the temple, many of his friends, who were drawn to him because of his great qualities, even travelled to Sri Math seeking his association; and as the result of their association with him, many also took shelter at the temple. Even the company he used to work for always set his exceptionally righteous behaviour as an example for everybody.

Although his detached household life was quite affluent and orderly, his service life at the temple was severely austere, renounced, unpretentious and was full of deep service attachment to Sri Guru-Gauranga. Although the Providence had him leave this worldly plane in Kedar-Badarikasram this year, on the strength of his service he rescinded it and, coming back from there, manifested his withdrawal pastime in his eternally aspired-after Sri Gaura Dham.

On the one hand, when we think about his great demise and remember his sincere dedication to Sri Guru-Gauranga, Sri Gaura Dham, Sri Ganga, and, above all, to every service he took care of one after another, we find no end to his great fortune. On the other hand, having now become deprived of the exalted association of such a great soul, neither can we measure our own misfortune. But ‘svatantra Krsnera ichchha haila sanga bhanga – his association broke off by the wish of independent Lord Krishna.’ Although Sripad Seva-Saurabha Prabhu is not personally among us today, all we can pray for at the holy feet of Sri Guru-Gauranga is that Sriman Mahaprabhu may not deprive us of his eternal association.
