The problem is the ego. Ego takes us away, and so many problems come from the ego. What to speak of us, we are tiny jiva souls, even Srimati Radharani has ego.

Srimati Radharani was thinking that She was senior, She was srestha (the dearmost), that She could control all gopis because Krishna had left all gopis and went to serve Her, so She was all-in-all. This kind of mood came to Her, and once She said to Krishna, "Can You take Me to the forest?" Krishna took Her to the forest and They walked and walked, but after a while Srimati Radharani said, "I cannot walk any further, can You take Me on Your shoulder?" Krishna immediately agreed, "Yes, climb up, I will carry You." As She was about to climb up, Krishna suddenly disappeared, and Radharani began to cry...

So, ego can take everything away—it can remove your service, it can take Krishna away. Everything can go away because of ego.

We think we have been initiated for many years but still have not reached our destination, we are not getting the proper benefit, that is why we do not feel so much enthusiasm for service, we do not do our service properly, we neglect it and begin to slacken. This is very bad for us. It is necessary to have enthusiasms (utsaha) and faith (visvas). Faith is the most important—it is necessary for the spiritual life to have the strongest faith.

We have so many bad habits, like atyahara (eating too much), prayascha (hoarding), prajalpa (gossiping), niyamagraha (superficial following of the rules), laulancha (greed), janasanga (bad association). Bad association, eating too much, not taking prasadam, it is all bad. You can read Srimad Bhagavad Gita, third chapter, sloka number thirteen ("Those who prepare food for their own pleasure partake only of sin") and you will understand it easily.

In Srimad Bhagavatam also, you can see what Uddhav Maharaj said. He asked what for we have got this head on our shoulders. The head is very heavy, but if you bow your head at the lotus feet of Krishna, Guru, Vaishnavs, Bhagavan, it will always be light. What have we got hands for? To clean the temple. What have we got the mouth for? To chant the Holy Name, but we are using it for prajalpa—always talking, always gossiping, gossiping. Gurudev also said that if you walk a lot, your legs will pain, so if you talk so much, your mouth will pain and you will lose the energy to chant the Holy Name.

It is necessary to understand these things.

Anukul and Pratikul
'Accept what is favourable to devotion and reject what is not favourable. Srila Sridhar Maharaj said that if you do both what is favourable and what is unfavourable, it will not work (the two do not go together).'

Sri Sri Damodarastakam
'To the Supreme Lord, whose form is the embodiment of eternal existence, knowledge, and bliss, whose shark-shaped earrings are swinging to and fro, who is beautifully shining in the divine realm of Gokula, who [due to the offence of breaking the pot of yogurt that his mother was churning into butter and then stealing the butter that was kept hanging from a swing] is quickly running from the wooden grinding mortar in fear of Mother Yasoda, but who has been caught from behind by her who ran after Him with greater speed—to that Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances.'

Imagine you are standing and six men—kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada, abhimana—are pulling you with ropes in six different directions. Tell me, what will be your position then?
