Laziness

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
3 December 2014

We have no enemy other than ourselves. If you do not bring benefit to yourself, no one else can do it instead of you.

'Time and tide wait for none'. Time is passing—do not wait! If we are not engaging ourselves in service, we become nidralasya hata sukarya virata akarya udyogi ami (নিদ্রলস্য-হত সুকার্য্যে বিরত অকার্য্যে উদ্যোগী আমি): always sleepy, lazy, and happy to do bad things.

"I engage in deceitful behaviour in pursuit of prestige. I am ruined by greed and constantly covetous. Such a sinner as I is shunned by devotees, and is a constant offender."

Saranagati, 5.5

You are science people. It is told, an idle mind is devil's workshop. Is it correct or not? If you do not do anything, bad thoughts will always come to your mind, but when you make yourself busy you cannot think of bad things. It is simple words, it is not even a spiritual matter.

Something is better than nothing—do something. How many days will you live in this world? Time is very short.

উঠরে উঠরে ভাই আর ত সময় নাই
'কৃষ্ণ ভজ' বলে উচ্চৈঃস্বরে

uthare uthare bhai ara ta samaya nai
'krsna bhaja' bale uchchaihsvare

Wake up, wake up, brother, there is no time! Worship Krishna!

You can die at any time—are you going to do something after death? Next life? Do something now.

My duty is to engage you in service to my Guru. I can tell you right now to get out, but it is not my duty—my duty is to engage, to try and try, and again try.

Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur writes very nicely:

আমার জীবন সদা পাপে রত
নাহিক পুণ্যের লেশ
নিজ সুখ লাগি' পাপে নাহি ডরি
দয়াহীন স্বার্থপর

amara jivana sada pape rata
nahika punyera lesa,
nija sukha lagi pape nahi dari,
daya-hina svartha-para,

My life is always engrossed in sin. There is not a trace of piety within it. I am never afraid to engage in sinful activities for the sake of my own happiness. I am merciless and selfish.

We think Gurudev gives us a room, Gurudev gives us prasadam, some accommodation, and we do not have to do service for the Guru. দয়াহীন স্বার্থপর, daya-hina svartha-para—unkind and selfish: we stay in Gurudev's temple, we take his energy, but we do not give him our own energy. Instead, নিদ্রলস্য-হত সুকার্য্যে বিরত অকার্য্যে উদ্যোগী আমি, nidralasya-hata sukarye virata akarye udyogi ami: we are lazy, we always want to sleep or do some bad works... What is this?

Follow Your Dream
''What is my desire? My only desire is that I can be a servant of the Vaishnavs.' It is not necessary to become a manager, or a big guru— if you want to become the dust of Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, that is sufficient to go to Goloka Vrindavan.'

Sri Sri Damodarastakam
'[Seeing the whipping stick in His mother's hand,] He is crying and rubbing His eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His eyes are filled with fear, and the necklace of pearls around His neck, which is marked with three lines like a conchshell, is shaking because of His quick breathing due to crying. To this Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, whose belly is bound not with ropes but with His mother's pure love, I offer my humble obeisances.'

We are practitioners; we are not big devotees or great Vaishnavs.
