Meaning of Mercy and Service

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Nrisingha Palli
10 August 2018, part 1

By the mercy of our Gurupadpadma, by the desire of our Guru Maharaj, the festival of Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj is held here at Nrisingha Palli for the first time. You have all gathered here to hear the glories and glorification of Param Gurudev Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. This is, however, a viraha-tithi (separation day). When the Guru leaves it is more painful that when one's own father leaves. Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj wrote about Prabhupad Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur in a kirtan,

krpaya hari-kirtana-murti-dharam
dharani-bhara-haraka-gaura-janam
janakadhika-vatsala-snigdha-padam
pranamami sada prabhupada-padam

"He is the embodiment of Hari-kirtan. He mercifully relieves Mother Earth of the burden upon her. He is an associate of Sri Gaura, and more kind and affectionate than a father. Eternally I offer my obeisance to my master's feet."

He writes about Prabhupad that he is more affectionate than a father, and this Prabhupad Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur's own and dearmost associate is our Param Gurudev, the founder acharya of Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math, Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. Today is his disappearance day...

He left this world on this day in 1988 in Gaura Dham. Guru Maharaj [Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj] told me that he felt as if the sky fell on him, or that as if he was struck with lightning, on that way...

Those who have some relation with the Guru, who can understand and who can know Gurudev, are never actually separated from their Guru. Who can know the Guru? Who can understand the Guru? You will not be able to understand your Guru unless you become a real disciple, so it is those who are real disciples that can know the Guru—they can understand what is Gurudev's innermost cherished desire.

We always say, "Gurudev, please give me your mercy." Do you understand the meaning of mercy, the meaning of "please give me your mercy"? I have told it before and a [Bengali] book is being printed now, you can get it in about seven days at the Math. I told there what mercy means (I told what I heard from Gurudev): "Gurudev, give me your mercy" means, "Gurudev, please engage me in your service." By doing your service properly you can please Gurudev, and for that you will have to tolerate much austerity—so many obstacles, so much suffering will come. If you can withstand all that and please your Guru despite all that, that is called mercy. Remember this. When Gurudev gives you any job, any task, that means you have got his mercy. Gurudev himself said, "Those who have no service have no mercy; those who have service have mercy."

Service opportunity comes by a great fortune but service can also leave within a moment—within a second Maya or some material desire can attack us. That is the difficulty.

তোমার সেবায় দুঃখ হয় যত,
সেও ত' পরম সুখ ।

tomara sevaya, duhkha haya yata,
seo ta' parama sukha

"All the distress I encounter in Your service is also my greatest happiness."

(Saranagati 16.4)

If there is some distress when you do service, that is a great joy. What austerity is it anyway? If you want to serve your Guru, you must work hard.

This time we do not get time to do a parikrama because past few days I have had to go out every day—it is necessary to please Param Guru Maharaj and Gurudev. I know that we gather here so that we can do some Vaishnav seva on this day, that is why I have been personally going out to Mayapur, Svarup-ganj and other places to distribute the invitation for the festival. If we can serve Param Guru Maharaj well, then Guru Maharaj (Gurudev) will be very happy.

One time, Gurudev called me and told me with much pain, "Vinod, if I come to Nabadwip, I will feel much pain... I do not like to be there at this time." That is why at this time of the year, Gurudev mostly stayed outside (he would keep himself busy with preaching at some other place), he did not come to Nabadwip Math. Since I came to the Math, I have seen him maybe only three-four times in Nabadwip on this day. One time he gave me the order and explained what Param Guru Maharaj liked and what he did not like and I arranged everything in accordance with that.

Regulated Life
'We are blinded by the illusory dust. How will we then see the transcendental abode? Those who eat regularly, who work regularly, who sleep regularly, can practise properly. Regular sleeping, regular prasadam is also part of service. If you cannot do it, you will not be able to practise.'

Durlabha manava-janma
'What sort of world is this? It is like a play of shadows. While I affectionately take it as my own, my days pass by in vain.'
দুর্লভ মানব জন্ম

Wake up, you have no time in your hand. Any time we can leave; any time we can die.
