Mahaprabhu's Teachings to His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Mahaprabhu teaches us so many things.
gramya-katha na sunibe, gramya-varta na kahibe "Do not talk like people in general or hear what they say. You should not eat very palatable food, nor should you dress very nicely. Do not expect honour, but offer all respect to others. Always chant the holy name of Lord Krishna, and within your mind serve Radha and Krishna." Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.236-237 We are always gossiping, always talking so much: talking, talking, talking. We lose our energy. Talking so much with your tongue, with your mouth, you waste your energy on other purpose, then how will you get the energy to chant the Holy Name? If you waste your energy on talking some nonsense, gramya-katha [lit. village talks, gossiping], gramya-varta [lit. village news, mundane news], how will you get the energy to chant the Holy Name, how will you get the energy to serve to the Lord, sadhu, your Guru? Do you understand it? It is an easy matter. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita tells about Mahaprabhu's conception. There are so many things there.
ara dina raghunatha svarupa-charane
ki lagi' chhadaila ghara, na jani uddesa The next day, Raghunath Das inquired at the lotus feet of Swarup Damodar about his duty. "I do not know why I have given up household life," he said. "What is my duty? Kindly instruct me." Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.228-229 "You have brought me here, but what is my duty? I was in a family life, and now I have brought my everything here, so what is my duty? Please tell me." Then Mahaprabhu said,
bhala kaila, vairagira dharma acharila
vairagi karibe sada nama-sankirtana
vairagi hana yeba kare parapeksa "Raghunath Das has done well," He said. "He has acted suitably for a person in the renounced order. A person in the renounced order should always chant the holy name of the Lord. He should beg some alms to eat, and he should sustain his life in this way. "A vairagi (a person in the renounced order) should not depend on others. If he does so, he will be unsuccessful, and he will be neglected by Krishna. Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.222-224 Did you hear that? If some renounced person is waiting for others to give something to him, Krishna will always reject him. Vairagi hana yeba kare parapeksa: he is waiting for others, "Oh, he will give me this, and I will take that." Karya-siddhi nahe, Krsna karena upeksa: Krishna will reject him. Mahaprabhu told this.
vairagi hana kare jihvara lalasa "If a renunciant is eager for his tongue to taste different foods, his spiritual life will be lost, and he will be subservient to the tastes of his tongue." Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.225 Did you understand? One who always follows his tongue (vairagi jihvara lalas kore), his spiritual matter always goes down (paramartha yaya). He becomes a servant of kama (lust), a servant of anger, a servant of greed. He forgets the Lord, forgets his Guru, and becomes a servant of his ego.
vairagira krtya—sada nama-sankirtana
jihvara lalase yei iti-uti dhaya "The duty of a person in the renounced order is to always chant the Hare Krishna mantra. He should satisfy his belly with whatever vegetables, leaves, fruits and roots are available. One who is subservient to the tongue and who thus goes here and there, devoted to the genitals and the belly, cannot attain Krishna." Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.226-227 'Sisnodara-parayana': you know the meaning of this. If you follow your tongue, you cannot control your sex life. This is the meaning of 'sisnodara-parayana'.
gramya-katha na sunibe, gramya-varta na kahibe "Do not talk like people in general or hear what they say. You should not eat very palatable food, nor should you dress very nicely. Do not expect honour, but offer all respect to others. Always chant the holy name of Lord Krishna, and within your mind serve Radha and Krishna in Vrindavan." Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.236-237 Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami wrote this...
visayira dravya lana kari nimantrana "I invite Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu by accepting goods from materialistic people. I know that the Lord's mind is not satisfied by this." Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.274 Do you understand? You cannot use even your family's money. If your father or your mother gives you some money, and you use that for your own purpose, it is also not good. Sometimes Das Goswami Prabhu's father sent him 400 rupees, chari-sata mudra (চারিশত মুদ্রা, 400 coins). Das Goswami did not actually take that money—he invited all the Vaishnavs, and even Mahaprabhu, for a big feast—but Mahaprabhu did not like that, "Oh, he invites everyone, and his pratistha (name and fame) is coming. All the Vaishnavs are going there, taking some pranami, he is giving them some prasadam, and through that his pratistha is coming." Name and fame were coming, and Mahaprabhu did not like that. Das Goswami understood it, and he rejected that money. He told his father not to send money any more. He became a beggar.
visayira anna haya 'rajasa' nimantrana "When one accepts an invitation from a person contaminated by the material mode of passion, the person who offers the food and the person who accepts it are both mentally contaminated." Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Antya-lila, 6.279 The mind of those who are taking prasadam (bhokta) will be disturbed, and the mind of those who are giving prasadam (data) will be disturbed—both are getting disturbance through that. Very nicely written. Jay Srila Guru Maharaj ki jay!
