Humble and Chaste Service

Today is a very good and a very big day for us. Today is the disappearance festival of three goswamis. Wherever they are living now, we only want them to allow us to serve their associates, associates of our Gurudev, and our Guru. We do not want to enter their party, but we only want their service as a dog—as a dog! "Tomara kukura, baliya janaha more (তোমার কুকুর বলিয়া জানহ মোরে): if only you can keep me as your dog!" We can only ask something following this line.

Asking is actually not good—we want to fulfil their desire, we think, "How can I serve you?" We pray: "Ki rupe paiba seva muni durachar. I have no qualification, I have no quality, but you are tolerating me, and that is sufficient (I am always barking, but you are tolerating me)." In this way you can get humility.

If we can serve the Vaishnavs in this way, if we can follow these rules, then we can continue our spiritual life. Some do service and much ego comes—that is a big problem. You can see Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami's, Srila Raghunath Das Goswami's, Srila Raghunath Bhatta Goswami's lifestyle, how they lived in Vrindavan, how they fulfilled Mahaprabhu's desire. Really, you can see their life history and easily understand what is the Vaishnav's quality.

Today I am praying to them, I am praying to all the devotees—it is not necessary to make a big problem out of a temple, it not necessary to become a big guru, a big master, it is not necessary to become a big manager—if you only want to be Vaishnavs' foot dust, Vaishnavs' dog, that is sufficient.

We do not want Brahma. Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj said that even if Brahma comes, we have no time to go with him because we have Gurudev's job (we must for instance cook for him, give him medicine, give him water, etc.). We have no time. If your Guru calls you, "Oh, give me a glass of water," and at the same time Brahma comes to you, will you go with Brahma? No, you will say, "I have no time to go to Brahma because I need to give a glass of water to my Guru." It is necessary to have such mood in our spiritual life, you must understand it.

Do you see? Srila Raghunath Das Goswami rejected everything—he rejected his position as a landlord, his big family, he left all this. He had eleven security guards, but he came out because Mahaprabhu had given him mercy. First, Nityananda Prabhu had given him mercy and he immediately could get mercy and service from Mahaprabhu, but before that he had tried so many times to go Mahaprabhu, but Mahaprabhu could not accept him.

That is why it is Guru-Vaishnav-Bhagavan. "Guru bade gauranga bhaje sei papi raurave padi maje": if you worship Gauranga your whole life but you do this worship without worshipping the Guru, you will still take birth and death, birth and death, you will keep on coming and going.

কয় বার এলি কয় বার গেলি
তবু তত্ত্ব না শিখিলি ।
নিজের মাথা নিজে খাইলি
এ দোষ দিবি কারে ভাই ?

kaya bara eli kaya bara geli
tabu tattva na sikhili
nijer matha nije khaili
e-dosa dibe kare bhai?

"Coming and going, coming and going, and never learnt anything. You have been eating your own brain, who will you blame now, brother?"

Coming and going, coming and going, eating and sleeping—but no result will come.

So, it is necessary for us to serve the Vaishnavs, to follow Gurudev's desire. Even if we stay far, it is not a problem: we can serve from far away. What is necessary is that we follow Gurudev's instruction, Gurudev's desire—we cannot follow our mind. We must be careful. Our mind is naughty, but we have some good intelligence (sumedha), good buddhi, and we should apply that good buddhi. How does buddhi come? Through good association. Buddhi, or intelligence, will come and brain will be good through good association. If you stay with a thief, you will be a thief; if you stay with a drunkard, you will be a drunkard; if you stay with a bad person, you will be a bad person; and if you stay with a good person, you will be a good person. So, if you read Gurudev's scripture, read Gurudev's lectures, if you hear Gurudev's songs and lectures, your mind will be clear, your mind will be clean and fresh. If you can follow this line, it will be very good for you.
