Path to Donkeyhood

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj,
Speaking to devotees in London
29 July 2012, part 1

It is very nice, very good if devotees come from time to time—slowly, slowly people will come in this way. Why do they not live in the temple permanently?

Devotee: Because they are studying, they go to university.

What will they do after the studies? Get a job? Everybody is studying so hard but what university did Srimati Radharani study at? [His Divine Grace chuckles.] Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur said,

জড়বিদ্যা যয়, মায়ার বৈভব,
তোমার ভজনে বাধা ।
মোহ জনমিয়া অনিত্য সংসারে,
জীবকে করিয়ে গাধা ॥

jada-vidya yata, mayara vaibhava,
tomara bhajane badha
moha janamiya, anitya samsare,
jivake karaye gadha

"All mundane learning is a manifestation of illusion (maya) and an obstacle to Your service. It brings about infatuation with the temporary world and turns the soul into an ass."

(Saranagati, 3.3)

When you get involved with so much education, maya (illusory environment) attacks you—it brings bondage for your spiritual life, and too much education turns you into a donkey, an ass. Do you understand it? It is not my words—Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur said "gadha" (donkey).

We are only wasting, wasting our time...

Hampering or Hankering?
Are you hampering your spiritual life with position, ego, tiredness, and pride, or hankering to proceed? Heed the words of Sri Gurudev: 'For as long as you have life in this body you must continue your practitioner's life! That is the most important thing for us in our life.'

Ki jani ki bale
'O Lord! You are merciful. This is my sole hope. There is no one who needs Your mercy more than I. Certainly You will dispel all my fear.'
কি জানি কি বলে

It is not necessary to be a very big scholar, or to be Rupa Goswami or Sanatan Goswami,
to be a temple manager. It is sufficient to be a gentleman...
