Gurudev always gave examples and his word was very strong.

One time, a devotee would come to me every day asking me to make a kitchen for them, I went to Gurudev and asked him briefly, without explaining much, but if you heard what Gurudev said, you would run away. I asked Gurudev, "Gurudev, can I make a kitchen behind there? Some bricks, stones are necessary..." Gurudev replied, "Please, forgive my offence, but I cannot be your servant any more." Do you understand what Gurudev said? He was saying, "This is your duty, why are you telling this to me? Why are you telling these material things to me?"

I do not want anyone to be discouraged, I am only telling you.

Another thing is some people chant the Holy Name so much, they say, "I chant three lakhs Names!", "I chant one lakh Names!" but what did Gurudev say? He said, "If I punch you in your belly, then no Hare Krishna will come from your mouth—'Mother! Father!' will come out." This is a good test of your attachment.

To give you an example, when I came here, I had run away from home and for thirteen-fourteen years did not give them my address. At first, I came to this area and became a school teacher, taught English and other subjects. Then I came here to the temple... When somebody asked me if I had father or mother, I said I did not. Service is the most important thing. Simple living, high thinking.

অল্প ভাগ্যে সেবা নাহি হয়
কোটি জন্ম থাকলে ভাগ্য
বিষয় ছেড়ে হয় বৈরাগ্য

alpa-bhagye seva nahi haya
koti janma thakle bhagya
visaya chhede haya vairagya

"Service does not come by just a little fortune. Only after ten million births of good fortune, can you leave this material world behind."

Only if you attain good fortune for millions of lives, will renunciation come, and renunciation means not markata vairagya (monkey, or false, renunciation): "Yatha-yogya visaya bhunja' anasakta hana (যথাযোগ্য বিষয় ভুঞ্জ' অনাসক্ত হঞা), accepting material necessities without being attached to material things. If you can do that, if you can practise in this way, it is good for you, and for your father, mother as well. If one's child becomes a sadhu, or a sannyasi, if they practise and serve the Lord, then, Guru Maharaj says, not only their father and mother, but twenty-one generations become rescued. I have told before also that just one bona fide sadhu can rescue the whole universe. Among millions of karmis (fruitive workers), there is one jnani (wise man), among millions of such jnanis there is one liberated soul, and among millions of such liberated souls one is only one devotee of Krishna—it is very rare, but just one such devotee can rescue the whole universe.

কৃপয়া হরিকীর্ত্তনমূর্ত্তিধরং
ধরণীভরহারক-গৌরজনম্ ।
জনকাধিকবৎসলস্নিগ্ধপদং
প্রণমামি সদা প্রভুপাদপদম্

krpaya hari-kirtana-murti-dharam
dharani-bhara-haraka-gaura-janam
janakadhika-vatsala-snigdha-padam
pranamami sada prabhupada-padam

"He is the embodiment of Hari-kirtan. He mercifully relieves Mother Earth of the burden upon her. He is an associate of Sri Gaura, and more kind and affectionate than a father. Eternally I offer my obeisance to my master's feet."

It is said about Prabhupad Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur, "He is dharani-bhara-haraka, he relieves the earth of its burden"...
