You must understand that the Deity is not a simple doll, it is not just made of some material. The Deity is Lord Krishna Himself, the Deity is Gaura Nitai Themselves. They appear there, and you must try to serve Them heart and soul. You may think, "Oh, before Venezuela was doing well and we had so much money, but now we cannot give proper food to Gaura Nitai..." but if you just give one Tulasi leaf and a drop of Ganges water, it is sufficient for Them. You must understand how merciful Nityananda Prabhu is. His mercy is not a small matter—He is Guru-tattva, and it is a very big matter. It is actually very difficult to get Nityananda Prabhu's mercy.

A few days ago we were at Panihati where Raghunath Das Goswami had got mercy from Nityananda Prabhu. After getting Nityananda Prabhu's mercy, all his bondage, all his problems, everything was solved. He had tried to go to Mahaprabhu many times—he wanted to serve Mahaprabhu, but many obstacles came in his life. So many problems came to him, he even had to get married, but after serving Nityananda Prabhu everything was resolved, all problems were solved and he finally got the mercy of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. We must understand this.

There is a place called Jhamatpur some 60-70 km from Nabadwip. This is the birthplace of Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami, and you have heard this story from Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita. There were two brothers, Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami and Govinda Das. One day, Govinda Das arranged some rented people to do Harinam sankirtan and invited a brahman called Gunarnava Misra (he was a very jealous person who did not follow any rules or regulations).

Gunarnava Misra worshipped only Gauranga Mahaprabhu and did not worship Nityananda Prabhu because he did not like Nityananda Prabhu. A servitor of Nityananda Prabhu called Ramdas Minaketan also came there that day, and that brahman did not give any respect, did not give even any asan or say anything to him. The brahman was doing his puja of Mahaprabhu while everybody else gave respect to Ramdas Minaketan because he was a servitor of Nityananda Prabhu.

Later, Ramdas Minaketan came to Krishna Das and asked him, "What is happening? What is your brother doing? He is worshipping only Gauranga, but he should know that without Nityananda Prabhu he cannot get the mercy of Gauranga Mahaprabhu! He does not give any respect to Nityananda Prabhu, he does not give any respect to Nityananda Prabhu's servitors, what is he doing? He is making an offence. I am very surprised and I am like shaking to see it. He does not give any respect to Nityananda Prabhu and does puja of Gauranga Mahaprabhu only! Even Gauranga Mahaprabhu gives respect to Nityananda Prabhu, but he does not! What is he doing? What result will he get? Where will it take him? This is half-hen logic (ardha-kukkuti nyaya)!"

You can read what ardha-kukkuti means in Chaitanya-charitamrita. When I was a brahmachari, I read it and could not understand it, so I asked Gurudev what ardha-kukkuti is, and Gurudev explained it very nicely. Ardha means half and kukkuti means a hen. A hen has two holes—it eats through one hole, and it passes the eggs through the other hole. You think, "Oh, I only need the egg, so I will cut the hen in half and keep the side that gives eggs. I will throw away the other half." This is foolishness, and this is what is called ardha-kukkuti nyaya: if you cut the hen, you will get nothing. So, similarly, if you serve Gauranga Mahaprabhu and do not serve Nityananda Prabhu, you will not get anything.

Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami was also very upset thinking, "What offence my brother is doing! He brings a brahmin who does not know anything... I should not stay here..." Later that night, Nityananda Prabhu came to him in a dream and said, "Do not associate with your brother. Do not stay in this house with your brother. Come to Vrindavan." Next day, he left his house and set off to Vrindavan. It was there, in Vrindavan, where he composed Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita.

So, without mercy of Nityananda Prabhu, you will not get anything. If you want to get the mercy of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, you should serve Nityananda Prabhu.

আশ্রয় লইয়া ভজে তারে কৃষ্ণ নাহি ত্যজে,
আর সব মরে অকারণে

asraya laiya bhaje tare krsna nahi tyaje
ara saba mare akarane

"Krishna never leaves those who have taken shelter in Him. All others simply die in vain."

(By Srila Narottam Das Thakur, Prarthana, 17)

If you do not take shelter of Nityananda Prabhu, you will not get the mercy of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and if you take shelter of Nityananda Prabhu, you must get the mercy of Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Without mercy of Nityananda Prabhu, all your attempts will be nothing. Nityananda Prabhu is asraya-vigraha, and Sriman Mahaprabhu is visaya-vigraha—without the asraya you cannot get the visaya.

Chastity Is Not Lip-Deep
'My word is very heavy, but I have to say it..' Who can appreciate chastisement coming from the lotus mouth of Sri Gurudev? Fortunate is the soul who hears such chastisement, and even more fortunate is the soul who digests it.

Jaya jaya gurudever
'Throughout the play of the past, present, and future, this servant prays for your mercy, desiring only to serve Sri Sri Gandharvika-Giridhari.'

Why do we not get energy to chant the Holy Name? What is the problem? The only problem is that we use our time, we use our tongue to speak about other things.
