Eternal Occupation His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Hold your mala with two fingers [between thumb and middle fingers]. Then, touch this big bead called Sumeru to your head and chant Pancha-tattva's Name:
শ্রীকৃষ্ণচৈতন্য প্রভু নিত্যানন্দ ।
sri-krsna-chaitanya prabhu nityananda This is Pancha-tattva's Name. Any time you start chanting, you should first touch the Sumeru bead, chant Pancha-tattva's Name, give 'jay' to your Guru, and then you can ask them for mercy because this Pancha-tattva has brought the Holy Name to this abode and without Their mercy we cannot chant this Holy Name. So, first you chant the Pancha-tattva's Name:
শ্রীকৃষ্ণচৈতন্য প্রভু নিত্যানন্দ ।
sri-krsna-chaitanya prabhu nityananda After that, start chanting from the big beads. There are two types of beads on both sides of the Sumeru—there are big beads on one side and small beads on the other side. Chant one by one starting from the big beads:
হরে কৃষ্ণ হরে কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ হরে হরে ।
hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare One by one. Next bead:
hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare In this way you will come from the big beads to the small beads. Do not cross the Sumeru bead—when you come to the small beads, start chanting again from the small beads: the big beads to the small beads, the small beads to the big beads. You can chant sixteen rounds or more in this way. More than sixteen is also good—it is sixteen rounds or more. If you are busy with service any day (you told me you are a software engineer, so you must be doing so much computer work, always busy with the computer) and do not get time, then you can chant the Holy Name four rounds minimum. Do not make your beads fast. Sometimes when your computer is running and you are sitting, you can chant the Holy Name with your mouth also, without beads. Sometimes, you are cooking, making a garland, cleaning, or doing any other work, even when you are bathing or going to the toilet, you can also chant at that time. (But do not take your beads there—chant without the beads!) You know, one time Mahaprabhu was going to the bathroom sticking out His tongue and holding it between His teeth. Gopal asked Him, "Prabhu, are You sick? Has anything happened?" Mahaprabhu replied, "No, it is just that My tongue has become very naughty—I am going to the toilet, it is a dirty place, and the tongue also wants to chant, 'Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna.'" Gopal said then, "Prabhu, what is the problem? You can go to the toilet and chant—You have told Yourself,
ki sayane, ki bhojane, kiba jagarane Whether you are sleeping, eating, or resting, always chant the Name of Krishna. (Sri Chaitanya-bhagavat, Madhya-khanda, 28.28) "You can chant twenty-four hours a day, so if you are chanting when you are going to the toilet, what is the problem?" Mahaprabhu said, "Yes! What you are saying is correct. From today your name will be Gopal Guru!" There is also the ten offences book. Read the whole book, you will see there that there are many offences (Vaishnav-ninda, and others). I do not have time to explain all of it now, but if you cannot understand something, you can always ask me later. Read what the ten offences are—you must memorise and avoid them. If you chant without offences, Krishna will reveal Himself in your heart and you will be successful in your spiritual life.
