It is our great fortune to be able to take part in some service today, on the holy disappearance day of Param Gurudev Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj. We have got an opportunity to take part in his service today. One thing I want to tell you is that coming to see a festival or coming to take prasad at a festival and coming to participate in the service at a festival are not one and the same thing. Guru Maharaj often said, 'Going to see the Deity of Durga and arranging Durga-puja are not one and the same thing.' When you come to Durga-puja to eat, you only come to the festival itself, but when you arrange it, you have to start thinking and doing things a long time beforehand. So, when we make a festival, we come beforehand to prepare the place, to take part in the services. There is so much service to be done. You can see that I keep remembering to one thing, another thing – every moment something comes to my mind.

I decided to test one devotee to see how much he loves me. I brought him here yesterday to cook, but I did not bring anything for him. He goes house to house to cook at festivals – people give him lists and he follows the list. But I did not give him any list. I bring him every year, so he should know everything. The only thing I brought was ghee. As for the rest of the things, I told him to go and look in the storeroom to check what there was and if he needed anything. I told him to check it, but he did not say anything after that, and today I see that he is doing all the cooking nicely without saying anything. You can see how much he is serving and what a good cook he is. He is responsible and very good at cooking. I wanted to test him – I thought, 'I will not bring anything, let me see how he will make puspanna and what vegetables he will cook...'

Gurudev tests us in different ways, and we must pass all examinations. There is only one reason why people fail – you can study all subjects very well, but if an extra subject you do not know well comes up, you are bound to fail. It is like that whether you are at middle school, high school, university or doing a master's course. Why should we take initiation? What does it mean to take initiation? The meaning of initiation is to get an opportunity to serve your Gurupadpadma and Vaishnavs. We must practise Krishna consciousness eternally.

If I do not wake up early in the morning, then I will not be able to wake up when I come here – I will struggle a lot to wake up for mangal-arati. It is necessary to wake up for mangal-arati every day, to do parikrama and after that do whatever service is to be done. It is true for everybody, be it a householder, a brahmachari or a sannyasi. But the problem is that we are not used to this, so we cannot wake up for mangal-arati, we cannot do parikrama...

নিদ্রালস্য-হত, সুকার্য্যে বিরত,
অকার্য্যে উদ্যোগী আমি ।

nidralasya hata, sukarye virata,
akarye udyogi ami

‘Ruined by laziness and sleep, I am averse to doing anything good and eager to do wrong things.’

(Saranagati, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)

We are ruined by laziness and sleep...

Saltamami
'If you lose your capital every day, you will eventually have a zero balance, and the next day it will be -1, then -2—then it will be lost for your life. You have got some sukriti, that is all right, but every day you must earn more through your service.'

We are preaching, but preaching for whom? For myself? Preaching what? Our own things? No, we must preach for our Gurudev.
