Service to Gurudev's Mission

Our beloved Gurudev Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj expressed his opinion, and we always speak about it in lectures. In Srila Sridhar Maharaj's time also, some Vaishnavs, some devotees preached that Srila Sridhar Maharaj was great, Srila Sridhar Maharaj was the highest pandit, the highest siddha purush, and many other things, this and that, but we must also think that if Srila Sridhar Maharaj is great, then his opinion is great too. His opinion was that we must follow Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj. He would say, "If you want mercy from me, then you must serve under the guidance of Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj. If you cannot follow that, then you cannot stay in our Mission—you will be ousted from my heart." So, if somebody says that they have a direct connection with Srila Sridhar Maharaj, they can say many things, but how is it possible to get mercy from Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj without the mercy of Gurudev (Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj)? Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj himself said it.

We can see Srila Raghunath Das Goswami’s example also. At first, he went to Sriman Mahaprabhu—he wanted to serve Mahaprabhu directly, but Mahaprabhu always sent him back home and gave him much guidance; but when Srila Raghunath Das Goswami had made the festival at Panihati following the order of Sriman Nityananda Prabhu and after he had got Sriman Nityananda Prabhu’s mercy, then all his obstacles, all his bondage, all his maya were removed from him and he could easily reach Sriman Mahaprabhu.

We can see in Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj's books the example of Mirabai, who worshipped Krishna. Krishna Himself says, "If somebody says, 'I am Krishna's devotee,' they are not My devotee. My devotees are those who are My devotees' devotees (My devotees' servants)." That is why it is said, "Radhara dasira Krsna sarva-vede bole (রাধার দাসীর কৃষ্ণ সর্ব্ব বেদে বলে)." Who does Krishna belong to? He is a servant of Srimati Radharani. Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur also says, "Radha-bhajane yadi mati nahi bhela Krsna-bhajana tava akarana gela (রাধা-ভজনে যদি মতি নাহি ভেলা কৃষ্ণ-ভজন তব অকারণ গেলা): if you worship Krishna directly, without Radharani, then it is useless, it is nothing. You cannot do that." That is why we do not give so much respect to Mirabai's worship or service—because she worships and wants to please Krishna directly. That is not our conception; that is not our realisation.

Our Gurudev, Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, also told his opinion many times in many places, and we must follow what he told, we must follow the instruction that he gave us. He told it many times and in many ways, and in the end he also made an Acharya Board, appointing acharyas and gurus in various countries. They are the Gurus declared by our beloved Gurudev, and they can give initiation. It is not a problem. However, if somebody becomes a guru without their Guru's instruction, then Gurudev told what happens—they can give initiation, they can become a guru, but not in our Mission: they will not be disciples or members of Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math. We cannot accept them as a devotee of Chaitanya Saraswat Math. Gurudev told this directly. Gurudev told his will. It is very important to understand this.

We must follow Gurudev's order; we must follow what he told us and told to the Mission. That is the main thing. We must follow the service that he gave us—this is the service that he takes, and this is what giving respect to Gurudev means. If you glorify Gurudev but do not respect his opinion, then this is not giving proper respect to him. He told his opinion, he told to follow his instruction, and if you do not follow it, then whatever glorification you make will not bring any relief, mercy, love, or anything else to Gurudev. If you want to help Gurudev's Mission, if you want to love Gurudev, then you must follow his instruction. That is the main thing that I want to tell you all over the world. If we understand and follow this, it will be sufficient for us.
