(2/12) Morning Tells the Day His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
The religion of this Age of Kali is Harinama-sankirtan (congregational chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord). So, everybody must wake up early in the morning. Even Muslim people do that. They wake up very early in the morning and do their namaz. It is prohibited for them to sleep until ten o'clock in the morning. In our line, too, those who genuinely practise Krishna consciousness also wake up early in the morning and come for mangal-arati: they begin their service to the Lord from the early morning. If somebody is used to sleeping until ten o'clock, will they be able to keep up with those who wake up at four or three in the morning? Sadhus do not sleep until ten. They wake up at three in the morning, go to the bathroom, take a shower, do their prayers, and then go to the mangal-arati, do Tulasi parikrama. After that, they offer some balya-bhoga to the Lord (some sweets or fruit). Then, they or their family members cook for the Lord, they offer bhoga to the Lord. If they work, they take prasad and leave for work. Where can they get prasad later in the afternoon? They pack a tiffin box and take it with them (or their wife prepares the tiffin box for them). This is what devotees do. In the evening, they come back home and serve the Lord – they do not sit at a tea stall discussing politics and gossiping. Devotees do not talk nonsense, do not sit and tell each other stories. If you sit at a tea stall talking, what benefit is it to you? Raise your hand if it helps any of you. So, do not waste your time on gramya-katha, on gossiping and criticising others. Women also like to do this. When they finish cooking, they have nothing to do, so they sit around gossiping. Instead, they can go to rest because they need to again do their service later in the afternoon. If you wake up early (at three–four in the morning), you will feel tired by noon, so you will naturally want to go rest. But if you are lazy and sleep sleep until ten, then you will want to gossip at home or visit other people's homes and gossip there. Sometimes, four–five wives from different households gather together and gossip about who did what, discussing all kinds of bad things. I see people do this all the time. Just today I saw some people sitting at a mancha, playing cards, chess, talking, etc. School children also come back from school and hang out on the streets. Now, they also have smartphones, so they spend hours scrolling through photos. And people aslo waste their time watching TV series. All these things create disturbances in our lives. Do not live like that. Do not waste your time. If you want to practise Krishna consciousness properly, then practise Krishna consciousness properly. Until and unless you become drawn and attached to the Lord, you will not be able to hear or feel these things. We have been forgetful of the Lord since time immemorial. If you tell a goat or a cow about the Lord, will it be able to understand it? The Lord has sent us to this human life to hear about Him – so that we can hear about Krishna consciousness and practise it in our own lives. If I listen to lila-kirtans or pala-kirtans for one day and do not practise anything in my life, what benefit is that to me? They come, sing some kirtan, and you give them two or five thousand rupees – they take the money and go on with their own families, drinking liquor, smoking cigarettes and enjoying. What benefit can people get by listening to such people's singing?
