'Nitai and Gaurachandra are two most merciful Lords. They are the best crest-jewels of all incarnations and the root of pure happiness.'

ভজ ভজ ভাই, চৈতন্য-নিতাই,

bhaja bhaja bhai, chaitanya-nitai,

visaya chhadiya, se rase majiya,
mukhe bala hari hari [2]

'Brother, serve, serve Chaitanya and Nitai with the strongest faith! Leave aside all material things and, immersing yourself into this nectar, chant out loud, "Hari! Hari!"'

What does it say here? 'Give up all visaya (material things).' Visaya means money, wealth, property, cars, houses, whatever you have. Does it mean that you should leave everything and go to live in the jungle? Do you think that you will come to the Lord like that? Never. So-called positivists (dristavadi), voidists (sunyavadi), impersonalists (mayavadi), renunciates (phalgu-tyagi) – they are the ones who believe in this. We believe in proper renunciation (yukta-vairagya), not in false renunciation or monkey renunciation. We live family lives, and we use all the worldly, mundane things in the service to Lord Govinda. So, when Srila Lochan Das Thakur says here that we must leave all visaya, what he means is that we must leave all material attachment.

আসক্তিরহিত, সম্বন্ধসহিত,
বিষয়সমূহ সকলি মাধব ॥

asakti-rahita, sambandha-sahita,
visaya-samuha sakali madhava

‘When you are free from material attachment and establish relationship with the Lord, then you will see that everything around you is Lord Madhav Himself.’

(‘Vaishnav ke?’, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupad)

There must be no attachment, but there must be the sense of relatedness. Be detached from this material world and everything in it, but be attached to the Lord. Do you understand what I am saying? If you do not understand something, then tell me, 'I do not understand it.' Say it; it is not a problem. There is nothing to be embarrassed or shy about. I can explain it to you not only once but a hundred times.

There must be no attachment, but there must be the sense of relatedness. What is that relatedness? It means that Krishna's things should be used for Krishna's service. It does not mean that you sit idle, with your arms folded and legs crossed.

Suppose a squirrel enters the Lord's room, but you continue sitting and eating. No. You must get up and immediately go to chase the squirrel away with the same hand that you were using to eat. It is same as you would do in your usual lives. Suppose, a mother has put her child to sleep on the bed and went to the bathroom to pass stool. There is nobody at home – her husband had gone to work. Suddenly, the child somehow rolled over and fell from the bed. The child begins to cry, and what will the mother do? Do you think she will take her time to have a wash? She will run as she is and quickly pick up her child. She will not care about any rules or etiquette.

So, when it comes to the Lord, you should be prepared to embrace raganuga-bhakti (spontaneous, natural devotion). Such was the direction of Srila Prabhupad. For the sake of service, you must be ready to cross the prohibitions imposed by rules and regulations (viddhi). Loving service is beyond all rules and regulations.

Suppose you are sitting and eating, and your father is walking to you and suddenly slips. Are you going to get up and go wash your hands? Your father has slipped, so you must run to catch him – by the time you go to wash your hands, he can fall and die! So, it is necessary to have a proper service mood.

বিষয় ছাড়িয়া, সে রসে মজিয়া,
মুখে বল হরি হরি ॥২॥

visaya chhadiya, se rase majiya,
mukhe bala hari hari [2]

'Leave aside all material things and, immersing yourself into this nectar, chant out loud, "Hari! Hari!"'

So, leaving 'all material things' (visaya) means leaving all material attachment. You live in your families and everything that you have – money, property, and so on – does not belong to you. The proprietor of all you have is Lord Madhav. Because we have much ego, we think that everything belongs to us, so we can enjoy everything. You accumulate a lot of money and then one or two generations of your offsprings enjoy it, and after that it is all gone. You think that you will enjoy food, clothes and so many things, but you cannot. Many die before they get to enjoy anything, and many get children who squander or sell everything.

দেখ ওরে ভাই, ত্রিভুবনে নাই,
এমন দয়াল দাতা ।

dekha ore bhai, tribhuvane nai,
emana dayala data

'Look, brother, in all the three worlds there is no other benefactor as merciful as They are.'

Just think about it! Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu is the Lord Himself, but He went house to house urging everybody, 'O soul! Stop sleeping! Wake up! This is not your house! You come from Goloka Vrindavan, but you have fallen into the bondage of illusory environment! Wake up and come home! As the result of your situation, you become born as a cow and spend your life in a cowshed, or you get born as a goat or a bull and live in some garden. You have similarly been born as snakes, frogs, jackals, dogs and all kinds of other species. You keep roaming this universe, but this is not your home! You have lost your address.'

Mahaprabhu did that but He did not have to do it – He could have sat on a throne in one place and taken worship like Lord Narayan. But He did not do this. He kept His word. When He was in Vrindavan, He promised to relish Srimati Radhika's divine mood, and when He came, He went door to door and cried for Krishna just like Srimati Radharani and all the gopis did. Before that, crying in anguish, all the gopis said, 'Krishna, You are making such wretches as us cry and suffer in this blazing agony, so You, too, will have to cry in Kali-yuga.' This is how, taking over Sri Radhika's divine mood, He went house to house approaching everybody and crying. He did not take worship like Narayan.

Our guru-varga also could have sat in one place, giving initiations quietly. There are such sahajiya gurus, there are many such 'home' gurus who practise all kinds of wrong things, stay at home, eat well and just generate disciples. They only sleep and eat, they do not do anything else. They will sit in front of you, let you wash their feet and after that tell you to drink that water. What do genuine gurus do in this world? They go house to house begging, 'Krsna bala, sange chala, ei matra bhiksa chai (কৃষ্ণ বল, সঙ্গে চল, এই মাত্র ভিক্ষা চাই). I am begging you for one thing only – come with Me and chant the Holy Name of Krishna! Come with me! I will take you to your home, I will take you to Krishna!' Who else is there as merciful as they are? They rescue jiva souls from Maya Devi's world and bring them to Krishna's family. They teach those souls how to practise Krishna consciousness and send them back to their own home in Goloka! Who else is as merciful as they are in this world?

Who is as merciful as Gaura and Nitai? Madhai beat Nitai, but Nitai said to him, 'Madhai, you can beat Me as much as you want, I do not mind the pain. If you can chant the Holy Name just once, then all My pain and distress will go away. Madhai, if you say "Hari bol!" just once, then I do not mind any pain. My only pain is that you cannot say, "Hari bol!" Please say "Hari bol" just once! It will make Me very happy, all My suffering and pain will go away.' In the whole of three worlds there is no other benefactor as merciful as They are.

সংসারে মজিয়া, রহিলি পড়িয়া,
সে পদে নহিল আশ ।
আপন করম, ভুঞ্জায় শমন,
কহয়ে লোচন দাস ॥৪॥

samsare majiya, rahili padiya,
se pade nahila asa
apana karama, bhunjaya samana,
kahaye lochana dasa [4]

'Lochan Das says, "Drowning in material life, I have been living as a fallen wretch never aspiring to come to Their feet. Now I am being punished for my own actions."'

Sankirtan Movement
'A temple is a house. The householder devotees can cook and serve the Deity, and all the brahmacharis and sannyasis are not meant to only sit and do japa. Their place is in the street—chanting, dancing, and preaching!'

We do not believe it, we think the Deity is made of wood, made of steel,
but the Deity is non-different from Krishna...
