(7/9) 'My Happiness or Your Head'

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Preaching programme in Hooghly district,
1 March 2019, part 7
Translated from Bengali

Five years passed somehow, and one day the king told his gurudev, 'Gurudev, I have been giving you 200 kg rice and quite a bit of money every year, but why am I not feeling happy? Why do I not feel peace at heart? You told me that I would feel happy, that I would get this result, that result, but even though I am king and have a beautiful, sweet wife, wealth, lands and subjects, why am I not feeling happy? I am still feeling disturbed and restless at heart. Internally, I am miserable.'

'Oh, you only took initiation, but you did not make a fire sacrifice, did you?'

'No, I did not.'

'Then you must make one!'

'All right, what do I need to make a fire sacrifice?' the king asked.

'I will make out a list.'

Then, the guru made out a huge list. When the king saw the list, he said, 'I have never even heard such names.'

'Oh, you can buy everything at the Darsakmad shop.'

'I have never heard of this shop.'

'Well, you do not need to go there. You can give me some money, and I will arrange everything.'

'Good, how much will you need?'

'One and a half thousand rupees should do.' He wrote that it is necessary to get one maund (40 kg) ghee, a lot of wood, and so on. The king was surprised, but he agreed and gave his guru the money. The gosai was happy, thinking, 'I will use a little for the fire sacrifice and keep the rest for the family!'

So, the fire sacrifice was made, and another six months passed. Six months later, the king asked his guru again, 'O gurudev! What is this? I still do not feel any happiness.'

'Oh, when you gave me money for the sacrifice, did you give it with a good mind?'

'I did not give it – my wife gave it.'

'Then she must have had some grudge. We must make a fire sacrifice again.'

'All right, here, I am giving you the money myself now. Do it.'

The guru made another fire sacrifice and another two months passed. The king was still unhappy. Finally, he told his guru, 'Listen, gurudev, I think that you must be cheating me. You are only taking my money and doing nothing. I am giving you seven days – if I do not feel peace within seven days, I will cut your head off.' Like guru, like disciple.

Now the guru was in big trouble.

[It starts raining] What is it? Rain? Do not worry about the rain, sit quietly. If the Lord wants to send rain, He sends rain. We have faith in the Lord, so we continue talking about Him, come what may. Indra is showing his power. He got some power to send rain, so he can make all potato and wheat rot, but when the Lord takes his power away, then he will understand it...

So, the king gave his guru seven days. The guru was devastated. He came home and cried to his wife, 'We are done! I have only seven days left to live. I have been cheating him all this time to bring money home, and he told me today that if I do not make him happy within seven days, he will kill me. How will I make him happy?' While the guru was lamenting to his wife like that, his son came home.

'Mother, give me some food,' he asked his mother.

'I have not cooked anything today,' the mother replied.

'Why? What has happened?'

'Your father is upset, and so I am.'

'What has happened to Father?'

'You never know anything! You are good for nothing! You do not do anything, you do not take care of the family. You are only walking everywhere like a madman.'

'But what has happened?'

'The king said to your father that if he could not make him happy within seven days, he would kill him.'

'Oh, the king wants to feel happiness? Do not worry, I will give him happiness! Do you have some muri or chipped rice? Give it to me, I will eat quickly and go to the king.'

The boy ate some muri and hurried to the king. The mother tried to stop him, 'Are you mad?! Where are you going? Do not go there, you will tell him all kinds of nonsense and make things worse!' The boy did not listen – he ran to the king's palace...

Simple Preaching,

'If you can only always chant this Harinam maha-mantra, it will give you a great result. Through chanting you will get service, and when you get service, that will be sufficient for you.'
