(3/4) Limited but One-Pointed Life His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Our lifetime is very limited. Even if we may live for one hundred, for eighty or ninety years – there are so many living entities in this universe, there are so many millions of species, so many millions of lifetimes that these hundred years is very little time. From the beginning of this life – from the moment you fall out of your mother's womb – you fall on the lap of your father, mother and other relatives, then you grow up, study, work, get married, have children, then look after you grandchildren. You pass your life in this way, but you cannot think about the Lord. In this sense, we have to be selfish. We are always thinking about our material matters – we are always thinking about external things (about our own bodies, about our own interests and happiness) – but we never think about the benefit of our souls. We must think about this. You must think about the Lord, think about how you can practise spiritual life. If you practise properly and nicely, you must think about the Lord every day – you must remember and chant the glories of the Lord every single day. Keep good, saintly association, engage in Nama-sankirtan, listen to scriptures, reside in a holy place and worship Deities with faith. How can you get good association? You do not get the association of saints by staying or sleeping at the same place with them. You must read saints' books. If you read their books every day, if you watch and listen to their programmes (lectures) every day, it will bring you much benefit. This is how you must live. Before you become a devotee of Krishna, you must become a devotee of His devotees. 'How can I serve Vaishnavs? How can I serve saints? How can I make gurudev happy? How can I make the Lord happy?' Our Gurudev always gave this example. Suppose Lord Gopal (Krishna) asks for a singara (samosa). All you must do is supply that singara – you do not need to think about other things. We must listen to what gurudev says. We say, 'Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj is a great devotee, a great soul!' but we do not follow Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj's instruction. If we consider him a great soul, then his word is also great and important – then we must follow what he says. If we think, 'Gurudev is a very great soul,' then we must give importance to his word and live following his word.
