'Where was I? Where have I come? And where will I go after that?' These things never cross our minds.

দিন যায় মিছা কাজে নিশা নিদ্রাবশে ।
নাহি ভাবি মরণ নিকটে আছে বসে ॥

dina yaya michha kaje nisa nidra-base
nahi bhavi marana nikate achhe base

'My days are passed in useless work and nights are wasted on sleeping. It never occurs to me that there is death sitting next to me.'

Days are passing one by one – from the very time the sun rises in the morning we live always busily engaged in worries about food, clothes and all these material things. We go to sleep in the evening, and as soon the next day comes, we wake up and start again. Many people say that they have no time. Many say that they have no time to chant the Holy Name – if that is so, then chant the Holy Name when you are sitting in the bathroom and passing stool (it takes you up to half an hour to take a shower twice a day, so use that time for chanting then). If you can do that – if you can call the Lord even at this time – it will give benefit to you. This is what Mahaprabhu also instructed.

কি শয়নে, কি ভোজনে, কিবা জাগরণে ।
অহর্নিশ চিন্ত কৃষ্ণ, বলহ বদনে ॥

ki sayane, ki bhojane, kiba jagarane
aharnisa chinta krsna, balaha vadane

'Whether you are lying down, eating or waking up, incessantly think about Krishna and chant the Name of Krishna with your mouth.'

(Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 2.28.28)

Always, constantly only chant the Holy Name of Lord Krishna; if you forget about this, then you have nothing good awaiting you in the future.

You are thinking about going to heaven, but even the gods and goddesses living in heaven are thinking, 'When will we get a human birth? When will we be able to chant the Holy Name of the Lord and return to our home?' When people accumulate pious credit, they go to heaven; but when that pious credit expires, you will have to again come down from there (you will have to fall down from heaven). Even though gods have a very long lifespan, they, too, have to come back from heaven. This is what people in this world forget. You are only always busy with your husbands, wives, children and grandchildren. You are passing your time, but how long do you think you will be in this world? Do you have time on all these empty talks and empty activities? If the Lord takes away the power of speech from you now, what will you do? Our parents create our bodies, but they did not create us. I and my body are not one and the same thing. When I leave this body, it will be taken to the crematorium on the bank of the Ganges...

Does it ever occur to us that now we are talking and doing everything, but we can be gone tomorrow or even in two minutes? Pariksit Maharaj was fortunate because he was able to know seven days before that he would give up this body and leave the world, but we do not have this kind of fortune. When we leave our bodies, everything will stay here in this world... Khatvanga Maharaj was also fortunate to have got a forty-eight-minute notice that he would give up his body and leave this world. But we do not know this. We think that we are these bodies, but we are not. You must always live in this awareness.
