Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur sang one very nice Sri Guru-mahima kirtan. We always sing Sri Guru-charana-padma and Gurudev krpa bindu diya, but Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur also sang a very nice song that is found in his Saranagati. The small Saranagati book was printed in Gurudev's time, it has finished now and I have given it for reprint. Saranagati is a very nice book. I have told you before, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur stayed in Godrumdwip (we are now also staying in Nrisingha Palli, Godrumdwip), that is why he wrote this kirtan.

gurudeva!
bada krpa kari', gauda-vana-majhe
godrume diyachha sthana
ajna dila more, ei vraje vasi',
harinama kara gana

Gurudev! Bestowing a great mercy on me, you have given me a place in Sri Godrumdwip amidst the forests of Gauda. You ordered me: "Reside in this abode which is non-different from Vraja and chant the Lord's Name."

kintu kabe prabho, yogyata arpibe,
e dasere daya kari'
chitta sthira habe, sakala sahiba,
ekante bhajiba hari [2]

But when, O master, will you mercifully grant this servant the qualification to do this? Then my heart will become steadfast, I will tolerate everything, and I will serve the Lord sincerely.

saisava-yauvane, jada-sukha-sange,
abhyasa ha-ila manda
nija-karma-dose, e deha ha-ila,
bhajanera pratibandha [3]

In my childhood and youth, I always indulged in material happiness and I have become habituated to bad things. Because of my own sins, this body has become an impediment to spiritual practice.

vardhakye ekhana, pancha-roge hata,

kandiya kandiya, tomara charane
padiyachhi suvihvala [4]

Now aged, I am afflicted by five-fold diseases. Tell me, how shall I serve? Crying incessantly, I have fallen at your feet, utterly bewildered.

saksadd-haritvena samasta-sastrair
uktas tatha bhavyata eva sadbhih
kintu prabhor yah priya eva tasya
vande guroh sri-charanaravindam

"I offer my obeisance unto the lotus feet of Sri Guru, who is said by all the scriptures to be the Lord Himself, and considered to be so by the sadhus, yet is also the Lord's beloved devotee."

(Sri Sri Gurvastakam, 7)

Gurudev, the mercy of Gurudev is the Lord Himself—he is non-different from Krishna. At the same time, it is said also 'kintu prabhor yah priya eva tasya'—at the same time, Gurudev is also a dearmost of Lord Krishna, a dearmost of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, i.e. he is Srimati Radharani.

We only need the mercy of Gurudev—without Gurudev's mercy we cannot understand the Guru. We cannot observe the Guru, we cannot realise the Guru with these mundane eyes. If you want to understand the Guru, then you need the mercy of the Guru. We think of Gurudev as of our father, our mother, but those who have any connection with their Guru, they know that those who are attached to the mundane world cannot understand Gurudev.

We can make some friendship with our sister, with our daughter, with our mother, with our parents, it is also a relationship, but it is not the same as the relationship that exists between the Guru and the disciple—between the Divine Master and the disciple—this relationship is a different thing. You can understand it from the following example. We can realise some material happiness with our mind, with our body, with our pancha-bhautik deha (the material body composed of five elements—earth, water, fire, air, ether), but the relationship that exists between me (i.e. us, the jiva souls) and the Lord is different—it is a transcendental relationship. There is some relationship between our body and the mind, but it is not the same relationship as between the jiva soul and the Lord. That relationship is different, it is a transcendental relationship, it is not a material relationship. Our relationship with our mind, with our body is not eternal (anitya), but the relationship between the soul and the Lord is eternal.

Who can come to tell us about this eternal relationship? Gurudev can. Sri Gurupadpadma, the worshippable embodiment of the Lord's mercy (Bhagavaner karuna-murti) will come to tell us all these things. We are fallen souls, we have forgotten Krishna.

'কৃষ্ণ-নিত্যদাস'—জীব তাহা ভুলি' গেল ।
এই দোষে মায়া তার গলায় বান্ধিল ॥

'krsna-nitya-dasa'—jiva taha bhuli' gela
ei dose maya tara galaya bandhila

"When the jiva soul makes the mistake of forgetting that it is an eternal servant of Krishna, Maya captures the soul by its neck."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, 22.24)

The jiva soul is a servant of the Lord, but we forget it and that is why we are suffering so much in the illusory environment. The Lord is our only Master—we are all His servants, and our duty is to serve Him. Who gives this knowledge, this realisation? Gurudev does. Krsna-bahirmukha jivera nahi Krsna smrti-jnana—those who have forgotten the Lord cannot understand these things.

Lured and Lashed
'If you enter the illusory environment, you become attacked by it and cannot run away from there—you get beaten so much but cannot run away; but the Guru can break the illusory environment and let us see the chinmaya dham, transcendental abode.'

Sri Sri Damodarastakam
'O Lord, although You are able to give all kinds of benedictions, I do not pray to you for the boon of impersonal liberation, nor the highest liberation of eternal life in Vaikuntha, nor any other boon [which may be obtained by executing the nine processes of bhakti]. O Lord, I simply wish that this form of Yours as Bala Gopala in Vrndavana may ever be manifest in my heart, for what is the use to me of any other boon besides this?'
