(4/12) Harinam: Devotees' Heartbeat
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
জীবন অনিত্য জানহ সার,
jivana anitya janaha sara ‘You must know the main truth that this life is not eternal and full of various dangers. Carry on your life but try your best to take shelter in the Holy Name.’ (Sri Gitavali, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) 'Carry on your life but try your best to take shelter in the Holy Name.' Always chant the Holy Name, at every moment.
হরের্নাম হরের্নাম হরের্নামৈব কেবলম্ ।
harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam ‘Chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name – there is no other way, no other way, no other way.’ (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.7.76) There is no other way, no other way, no other way in Kali-yuga.
একবার কৃষ্ণনাম যত পাপ হারে ।
eka-bara krishna-name yata papa hare 'A sinner cannot commit more sin than once chanting Krishna's Name can remove.' If you chant the Holy Name just once, all your sins can go away, but we chant the Holy Name so many times, do our sins go away? Why are they not going away?
অপরাধশূন্য হয়ে লহ কৃষ্ণ-নাম ।
aparadha sunye haye laha krsna-nama ‘Chant the Holy Name of Krishna without offence and you will quickly get the treasure of divine love for Krishna.’ What does it mean? It means that you must chant the Holy Name without offences. On the other hand, if you chant the Holy Name more and more, your offences will go away. It is said that you can attain liberation through namabhasa (shadow chanting of the Holy Name); and as you chant the Holy Name more and more, all your offences will go away and you can chant the Holy Name purely. You must chant more and more. Whether you are eating, lying down, sitting down or sleeping – whatever you do – always chant the Holy Name of the Lord.
কি শয়নে, কি ভোজনে, কিবা জাগরণে ।
ki sayane, ki bhojane, kiba jagarane ‘Whether you are sleeping, eating or waking up, incessantly think about Krishna and chant the Name of Krishna with your mouth.’ (Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 2.28.28) Always chant the Holy Name, always think about your guru, Vaishnvas and the Lord. You have got a very short time. Millions of years have already passed in your lives – now you are born as humans, and you will live only for meagre one hundred years (and even that is not certain – you can leave this body at any time). You came to this world and you will have to leave it one day, but what have you done in the meantime? You want to know everything, but first you must know who you are! People create so many things – they create bombs that can efface whole countries, they create huge aeroplanes, military jets and helicopters – but can they do anything about a tiny mosquito that is capable of killing thousands of people? A tiny single mosquito can infect so many people with dengue fever, and nobody can stop it. We say that we should be humbler than a blade of grass – can they create a single blade of grass? Can they create a single grain of rice? They cannot. To create a grain of rice, they need another grain of rice, then they can do it. They cannot give life. Although they create so many great things, they actually have no capacity. They only can talk a lot. Our parents gave us these bodies, but they did not give us that who we are. That who we are comes from the Lord. That which we call 'I' is the soul, and our souls are created by the Lord. Our parents only gives bodies. They are called 'biological parents' because their sperm and eggs are mixed and then a body is produced. Cows' and goats' bodies are created in the same way, too. Such parents do not create that which I am – my soul. My soul is given to me by the Lord. The Lord is the master of everything, He is the owner, the controller, but we bypass Him and live in this world doing anything we fancy. We celebrate holidays, we make many plans and arrangements – we forget that God is at the root of everything. But devotees are not like that. Whatever they do, devotees always remember the Lord. As soon as they open their eyes in the morning, they remember the Lord and then only get up from the bed; and when they go to bed at night, they go to rest thinking about the Lord. They always think about God – when they sleep, when they eat or when they do anything else. They live always chanting the Holy Name.
