(6/12) Repent and Revolt
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
There is one more beautiful thing written in Sri Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu:
কামাদীনাং কতি ন কতিধা পালিতা দুর্নিদেশা,
kamadinam kati na katidha palita durnidesa, "O Lord! How many kinds of wicked orders from lust and others I followed! They had no mercy on me, nor were they ever satisfied! O Krishna! Suddenly, I managed to leave their side and got some good intelligence—I have surrendered at Your fearless lotus feet, please engage me now as Your servant." (Sri Bhakti-rasamrita-sindu, 3.2.25) 'My desires have ordered me to do so many things – how much I have been tolerating, carrying out their wicked orders! How many orders I have carried out pursuing money and women! I have wasted my health, I have wasted so much money. Despite that, all these desires never showed any mercy on me. Neither have I ever felt ashamed... O Prananath! Now I understand that I have no other way, no other shelter except You. Leaving everything behind, I have now set out to search for Nityananda Prabhu. O Doyal Thakur!' [Aside] There is some service. Apart from listening to Hari-katha, it is also necessary to cut the vegetables in the kitchen, so if anybody wants to do some service, please go upstairs and help them cut the vegetables. If you want to serve Doyal Thakur (Merciful Lord), go upstairs and cut the vegetables. There is going to be a big festival tomorrow and many people will come to take prasad, so it is necessary to prepare for it. You have an opportunity to serve the Lord. 'O Doyal Thakur! Please set me free – let me leave all material enjoyment! Save me from all the non-eternal sense of duty! Fulfilling my material duties, maintaining my material life and following religious duties – I cannot go this way anymore, this path is not for me! I am surrounded all around by all kinds of enjoyment: rupa (eye-enjoyment), rasa (tongue-enjoyemnt), gandha (nose-enjoyment), sabda (ear-enjoyment), sparsa (tactile enjoyment)...' Many people say, 'Oh, I am only twelve years old. I am just a child, so I should study now!' Then they turn thirty and think, 'Oh, I am a newly married husband, so it is time for me and my wife to enjoy our youth. When I get old and all my children grow up, then I will practise spiritual life.' Is this true or not? Is this not what you all say? You think, 'When I get old, then I will think about God, and then I will call out to God.' But you must think: when you get old, your whole body will become weak, all the enthusiasm you feel in your youth will be gone, your health will be ruined, you will not even be able to walk without somebody's help (another person will have to come and pull your hand to help you move from one place to another) – even if you suddenly want to practise spiritual life at that time, you will not be able to. That is why it is written in Sri Kalyan-kalpataru:
'জীবন সমাপ্তি কালে করিব ভজন,
'jivana samapta kale kariba bhajan, '"I will practise spiritual life at the end of my life, but now I will enjoy family life at home" – intelligent people will never say such things because this body is bound to perish.' (Sri Kalyan-kalpataru, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur) 'I will practise Krishna consciousness at the end of my life. Now I will enjoy my family life.' [His Divine Grace makes a side remark] All this will come out as a book, you should read it. I write it bit by bit whenever I remember something because when you give a class you cannot remember everything all the time. The book – Guidance 4 – will come out soon. This life is uncertain! When you turn sixty and reach your retirement, you will be lying in bed, counting days to your death. So, when people say, 'I will practise Krishna consciousness when I retire,' this is not intelligent. Those who say such things simply cheat the Lord. They will not be able to practise Krishna consciousness in their old age! You will not be able to focus your mind on spiritual life, neither will you feel any taste for it. Your previous material life and reactions of your past actions will create such obstacles in you that you will not be able to overcome them. You will not be able to tolerate the pull of your past actions. So, you say that you will practise when you are old? You will not! There is no question of right time or wrong time when it comes to practising spiritual life. So, wherever you are in your lives at present, practise Krishna consciousness starting from today itself. There is no time! Do not wait. Time is going. Whether you are a student or a professor, wake up and start practising now. Do not delay! To start practising from a young age is the best. Remember this.
