The result of chanting the pure Holy Name is inconceivable. It is necessary to have faith and to have control over your mind and heart. If you can truly chant the Holy Name, if you can genuinely serve your guru and Vaishnavs, then you can get a good result. This is how we should practise Krishna consciousness.

Always reject what is unfavourable to devotion. You cannot drink milk and along with drinking milk also smoke tobacco. It does not work like this. When a doctor gives you some medicine, you must have faith in it. If you commit an offence at your guru's holy feet, you must ask him forgiveness. You must come and say openly, 'Gurudev, this is what has happened.' Gurudev will never hate you for that – he will welcome you back and embrace you. This is what Srila Prabhupad told. You must be open with your guru. If you come to a doctor but keep your symptoms from him, how will he treat you? You should come to a doctor and tell openly, 'This is happening, that is happening.' Even if you secretly take some medicine from another place, you should tell the doctor about it. There is nothing to be shy about or ashamed of. There is no need to be afraid. You must be frank and open, then the doctor can treat you well. The same is true when you come to a guru.

The guru is the very centre, the very core of the disciple's heart. The relationship between the guru and the disciple is full of sweetness. If you do not have that kind of relationship with your guru, then you will not be able to understand anything.

Gurudev is our medium. Is it possible to write a letter or make a phone call directly to the Lord? Does anybody know God's phone number? We all know each other's phone numbers, we all have mobile phones, but the Lord's phone is His flute – and all the digits of His number are zeros. When the Lord makes a call with His flute, everybody comes running to Him. Has Krishna given us a right to make such calls? Krishna is known as Vamsivadan, the Flute Player – whenever He plays His flute, all the gopis, cows, calves come running to Him. But at present our right and position is to chant His Holy Name, this is the right and qualification He has given to us. That is why we must chant His Holy Name. The Lord gives everybody service according to their capacity and right. Always serve according to your right, do not try to transgress your qualification. Serve according to your capacity. Do not jump over your head.

When you come to serve, the most important thing is that you must serve in strict adherence and submission to your guru and Vaishnavs. Do not mix with everybody, do not go anywhere and everywhere. Do not mix with any and every party.

Suppose I am doing a fire sacrifice. I put in the fire one spoon of ghee and then one spoon of water, then again one spoon of ghee and one spoon of water. Is it possible to do a fire sacrifice like that? It is not. You do something good, but at the same time you also continue doing something bad – you will not get anywhere like that. You must do what is good and stop doing what is bad. So, do what is favourable to devotion and reject what is unfavourable to devotion. Gambling, intoxication, illicit sex and slaughter must be given up.

Playing dice, cards, gambling, drinking alcohol, chewing paan, smoking cigarrettes, drinking tea – all this must be given up. Do not mix with women illegally (out of wedlock). Slaughter means cruelty to other living entities. Do not kill any souls. 'Sarva-jive krsna-adhisthan (সর্ব্বজীবে কৃষ্ণ-অধিষ্ঠান). Krishna is present in all jiva souls' (Gitavali). The Lord lives within all living entities, so you must not kill anybody. Always remember this and serve the Lord.
