Golden Opportunity

Krishna has given us this opportunity, we must not wait for a long time. The Lord's representative has come to us to tell us what is necessary for our spiritual life, to tell us what we have got this human body for, etc. We had got this human body many times before, but you do not know if this time is the last time or not—you may not get this opportunity again next life, you may not get this human body again. If you do not get a human body next life, you will not be able to serve, to chant the Holy Name. That is why you should not wait for the next life.

Sometimes, we offer bhog to the Deities, to Radha-Krishna or Gauranga Mahaprabhu, but we do not know whether Krishna takes it or not—we cannot see whether Krishna receives our offering or not. However, we can always talk to the representative of the Lord (the guru), we can always tell our problem to him, we can always consult with him, offer food to him, and we can easily understand what he likes—in this way we can serve the representative of the Lord properly.

We must understand that the guru comes through a guru-parampara—through Srila Rupa Goswami's line, Srila Sanatan Goswami's line. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu gave everything to Srila Rupa Goswami, therefore we must take initiation from the person who is carrying the flag of Rupa Goswami's line. That is the main thing. Also, taking initiation does not mean only taking the mantra—taking initiation means we must follow Gurudev's instruction, we must listen to what Gurudev tells and obey his instruction. If we give a letter directly to Lord Krishna, we will not get any answer from Him, but we can convey our message to our Lord through our Gurudev—Gurudev will tell everything, he will tell about our problem to the Lord. The guru is the Lord's medium, and he can convey our message to the Lord. In this way we can understand everything and can serve the Lord.

Therefore, we should not wait to take initiation. Srila Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur said that in this world you will get so many gurus but you will not get a proper disciple. It is necessary to be a proper disciple. Before becoming a guru, one must first be a proper disciple. A proper disciple means serving and following Gurudev's instruction without any condition—a proper disciple follows what Gurudev tells.

The Lord is the visaya-vigraha (worshippable), and Gurudev is the asraya-vigraha (shelter-giver). Therefore, we must take shelter of Gurudev and follow his instruction. We must serve our Guru and Vaishnavs—in this way we can please the Lord, we can make the Lord happy.

Actually, Gurudev is the centre of the disciple's heart. If you follow Gurudev's instruction properly, you can become the proprietor of Gurudev's property. Gurudev's property is not his building, his temple, his construction—these are not his property; his property is his love and affection, his heart, etc. If you want to get this property—this love and affection—from your Gurudev, then you must follow Gurudev's instruction with chastity.
