(1/6) Pure Kirtan Springs from Heart

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad

Uluberia, evening class

মূকং করোতি বাচালং পঙ্গুং লঙ্ঘয়তে গিরিম্ ।
যৎকৃপা তমহং বন্দে শ্রীগুরুং দীনতারণম্ ॥

"The dumb can speak, the lame can climb a hill—all it takes is mercy from Gurudev."

(Bhavartha Dipika)

First of all, I am offering my full obeisance at the holy lotus feet of Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, begging him for his causeless mercy and aspiring to serve him; after that, I am offering my obeisance to all guru-varga, to all my god-brothers and sisters, to all the listeners, to all the motherly lady devotees, to all devotees, and I am praying to you all for your mercy to this lowly soul.

One year later, we have again come and gathered here in Uluberia. Sannyasis, brahmacharis and devotees have come today. We are assembled here today to glorify and hear about the Lord. This opportunity does not come every day.

A bad day is not a cloudy day—a bad day is a day without Hari-katha. We can say that all our days pass as bad days because narrations about the Lord, glorification of the Lord does not come to our ears all the time. We lack time, we lack good fortune, and we are always busy with our own life, with the gratification of our own senses. We do not always get an opportunity to glorify and hear about the Lord (to engage in sravan and kirtan), but we are fortunate that this opportunity has come to us today. We must engage all our senses in the service of the Lord—we will use all our senses for the pleasure of the Lord today. This is how we shall proceed. If you listen about the Lord ("sravan" means "sreyo-yoga-van", "connecting with the auspicious"), you will get the supreme benefit.

When you chant kirtan, the Lord should become happy, Nityananda Prabhu should become happy. This is how you must chant kirtan. Hari-katha (speaking and hearing about the Lord) is also kirtan. Kirtan is not only singing and playing the kartals and the mridanga. Kirtan is that which makes the Lord and devotees happy. Doing kirtan and singing songs is not the same. When you sing a song, it gratifies the senses of the singer and the listeners. But if you chant the kirtan of the Lord, Lord Nityananda Prabhu, Lord Gaura Hari, Lord Sri Krishna become happy. So, our guru-varga tells us to always chant such kirtan. It is necessary to chant kirtan with your heart. Do you understand? This is not just parroting some words or memory exercise. If you teach a parrot to say "Hare Krishna", it will say it, but when a cat pounces at it and catches it, "Hare Krishna" will not come out of its mouth—only the bird's sounds will come out. So, we must chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra in such a way that it must come from out hearts. The Name must spring from our hearts.

Gurudev has given us the seed of the creeper of devotion (bhakti-lata bija). If we water this seed with the water of sravan and kirtan and can grow this wish-fulfilling devotional tree (bhakti kalpa-vriksa), then we will get the supreme benefit.

A Lesson on Surrender
'Aren't you ashamed?! You have already given this body to Me, then how can you want to spoil My property? This is not your property!'—pastimes of great Vaishnavas are not just stories, we have learn from them.

You may not know so many scriptures, but if you are gentle, have good qualities, you have sympathy, love, and affection for others, then you can be a proper manager of a temple.
