His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad

Basirhat, evening, 28 January 2020, part 2
Translated from Bengali

দিনের মধ্যে আবল-তাবল
কত পচাল পাড়িতে পর
তার মধ্যে কি একবার
গোবিন্দ বলিতে নার ?!

dinera madhye abala-tabala
kata pachala padite para
tara madhye ki eka-bara
govinda balite nara ?!

"How much nonsense you can talk every day! How many idle talks you have! Can you not say the Name of Govinda even once?"

(Folklore)

We talk so much! We only know to talk and think about food and clothes. We think so much about our body, we worry so much about it that we do not get time to call out to the Lord. We do not serve the Lord with love. Some worship the Lord out of fear, some worship the Lord in hope of getting something, and some worship the Lord out of duty (they think that because they are born, they must serve the Lord), but we do not serve the Lord with love, with transcendental divine love (prema). We do not even want, do not even show any desire to taste the nectar of the divine love for the Lord—we never hanker for it. We cannot submit ourselves to the Lord earnestly: "Krishna, You are my everything. Please, may I become Yours!" We say many things, we chant Holy Names with our mouths so much, but before you come to give advice to others give advice to yourself! First study and learn yourself—practise what you preach first—then you can give advice to others.

নিজ আচারি' ধর্ম্ম জীবকে শিখায় ।
আচার না করিলে শিখান না যায় ॥

nija achari' dharma jivake sikhaya
achara na karile sikhana na yaya

"First follow the instruction yourself, then teach others. If you do not practise what you preach, your preaching will not work."

That is why sadhus, Guru and Vaishnavs come door to door, house to house, begging, "Krsna bala, sange chala, ei matra bhiksa chai: I am begging you for one thing only—come with Me and chant the Holy Name of Krishna!" You must chant Hare Krishna.

এনেছি ঔষধি মায়া নাশিবার লাগি ।
হরিনাম মহামন্ত্র লও তুমি মাগি ॥

enechhi ausadhi maya nasibara lagi'
hari-nama maha-mantra lao tumi magi'

"I have brought the medicine to dispel Maya. Pray for this Hari-nam maha-mantra and take it."

It is necessary to beg and pray for the Holy Name (for the Hare Krishna maha-mantra). You must want it. I have brought you medicine to destroy your illusion! You have fallen into illusory bondage and have forgotten the Lord, the Supreme Person. You have forgotten what is the truth and take falsehood for truth. Falling into illusory bondage, you have forgotten those who are your own—you have forgotten that Krishna is your near and dear. Bound by the material family life, you think that your wife, son, daughter, friends and relatives are your own. You live attached to all this, but you have no attachment to the Lord!

বিষয়ে যে প্রীতি এবে আছয়ে আমার ।
সেই মত প্রীতি হউক চরণে তোমার ॥

visaye ye priti ebe achhaye amara
sei-mata priti hauk charane tomara

"May I have the same affection and attraction to your feet that I now have for material things."

(Gitavali, 4.5, Srila Bhakti Vinod Thakur)

You must serve the Lord with the same love that you now have for your wife, son, friends and relatives. If you do not serve the Lord with love, you will not get Him. You will have to keep coming to this world again and again—you will have be born again and again. If you think how to fulfil your own interests, how to get something for yourself, how to ensure your own happiness and comfort, and if you cannot love the Lord, then it is not possible to get the Lord like that.

Sadhus, Guru and Vaishnavs have left everything in this world for the sake of the Lord. I am not talking about those who only call themselves sadhus—not some tilak-wearing sadhus. One does not become a sadhu just by wearing tilak marks. It is necessary not to dress as a sadhu but to become a sadhu. If only you could take the association of such genuine sadhus who do not understand anything except service to the Lord, who do not waste their time on any other things, who have no laziness or sloth—who only always talk about the Lord, think about the Lord, who yearn for the Lord!

We are wretched souls, deeply riveted to illusion. There exist conditioned souls, and there exist liberated souls, but we have fallen so deep within material family life! "Visaya-visama-visa satata khainu, gaura-kirtana rase magana na hainu (বিষয়-বিষম-বিষ সতত খাইনু গৌরকীর্ত্তন রসে মগন না হইনু)—I have always been taking the deathly poison of the material world and have never been attracted to the kirtan of Gaura." We are always drinking the poison of visaya (material world and all that is in it). Even though we know it is poison, we still drink it, thinking it is nectar. What to speak of hankering and longing for nectar, we are not even trying to get it. Yet those who have taken nectar cannot even think of getting anything else. Longing for the great joy of this transcendental divine love, we must always lament and feel distraught, "I have not been able to serve You, my Lord! Prabhu, my life has passed in vain, and there is nothing I can do now! I have become old and ruined by the five material diseases, I cannot do anything for You now!"

It is necessary to always feel distraught and anxious to get the Lord. It is necessary to always have a very strong desire, then the Lord will give you His darshan one day. Do you understand what I am saying?

A Life of Joy—Whose Joy?
'We must understand, 'How will I serve my Guru? How will I please my Guru?' It is not important that I become happy, it is important that I make my Guru happy.'

If you are thirsty for some material attachment, for some material things,
you will never get relief from karma.
