(7/7) Run Behind Genuine Krishna Consciousness

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Basirhat, evening, 28 January 2020, part 7
Translated from Bengali

I come to the programme and bring so many beads, but somebody instead buys bael (Bilva) beads and says, "Oh, I am worshipping the Lord!" but their beads are sitting in their room. You can practise even with your mouth—is it necessary to buy fifty-rupee beads? Can you not open your mouth? You can chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra with your mouth: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. What do you need to buy beads for? You are eating fish and meat at home, but externally you show others that you are wearing tilaks and neckbeads. If that was so, then everyone would be the same—everyone would be levelled as one. If you want to level everybody as one, then everybody must become devotees of Krishna.

The Lord says, "Those who say they are My devotees are not My devotees." People say that they want to be devotees of Krishna, but that is not right—first, you must become a devotee of devotees, a devotee of Gaura and Nitai. First become a slave of Vaishnavs (vaisnava-dasa), then a slave of your Guru (guru-dasa) and only then a slave of Krishna (Krsna-dasa). People cannot become servants of Vaishnavs and their Guru, but they jump to become devotees of Krishna. They bring everything to one level and teach people wrong things.

There is a group that says that you must eat vegetarian food once a week. Another group says when you cook, you can take the pots that are used for social functions—they say, "Just dip those pots into the Ganges, and they will become pure!" They cook beef in those pots, but they do not care. Some go even further—they say, "Oh, you can eat meat every day, just dip yourself into the Ganges every day after that, and everything will be all right." This is what people 'preach'...

When I tell people about the glory of ekadasi, I tell them that sin stays in five kinds of grains on this day (mustard seeds, sesame seeds, flour, rice, dal). They hear this, and when husbands come home, they tell their wives and daughters-in-law, "Be careful! Do not do all this! If you do not eat meat on ekadasi, it will reduce your husband's life! Each ekadasi you follow, the life of your husband will be one year shorter!" So, women become scared, "Oh, no, no, I do not want my husband's life to be shorter! I do not need all this ekadasi, I would rather eat meat!" What will you say? Then, another group comes and says, "If you follow ekadasi, all sin will go away! Do not eat meat! If you do not eat meat and rice on ekadasi, your husband's life will be one year longer!" There is thesis, and there is antithesis.

I am explaining these things to you, but you easily become enamoured by illusion. Brahma comes to you with some things, and you become charmed and run there. Indra comes to you with some wealth and opulence, and you run to Indra. But even if you accumulate piety and reach heaven, you will have to come back from there one day. We must run after genuine Krishna consciousness, after the Lord and the divine love for the Lord.

Attachment to Service or to the Self?
'They want some relation, but actually they take from the devotees more than they give. Such is this world, people always think about themselves. People do not serve properly—they come to use Gurudev, they do not come to surrender to Gurudev..'

Sometimes some bondage, some problem may come in our spiritual life, but it is Krishna
testing us: how much love and affection do we have for our Guru, for the Lord?
