(6/7) Make Your Heart Pure

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Basirhat, evening, 28 January 2020, part 6
Translated from Bengali

'শ্রদ্ধা' শব্দে—বিস্বাস কহে সুদৃঢ় নিশ্চয় ।
কৃষ্ণে ভক্তি কৈলে সর্ব্বকর্ম্ম কৃত হয় ॥

'sraddha'-sabde—visvasa kahe sudrdha nischaya
krsne bhakti kaile sarva-karma krta haya

"Sraddha is a firm, determined faith that by serving Krishna all actions are accomplished."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.22.62)

It is necessary to have faith. There should be no going hither and tither in your mind. Mind is always fickle—it always says one thing, then another. One time, somebody asked Srila Prabhupad, "Prabhupad, my mind is restless, and I cannot control it. I cannot fix my mind when I am chanting mala." Just today, somebody asked me also, "I was busy with the fire sacrifice, but some girl came and disturbed me. What am I to do?" I told him, "You have learnt something, so tell me what you think the solution is." You are doing a fire sacrifice, calling the Lord—everything else must go away. Call out to the Lord, and the Lord will arrange everything. But can we do this? Tell me. We come to read Bhagavatam and say, "O Lord, the Master of the World! I do not want wealth, I do not want followers, I do not want a beautiful wife or to be a poet!" But when you get some news that your land is being taken away or somebody else is now working on your land, you give up reading Bhagavatam and run to see to your land. Is that true or not? Such is our position. Throw it all out! Prabhupad also said, "Let it all burn!" He also asked devotees: "Have you come with a return ticket?" It is not necessary to come with a return ticket. You must come here without any return ticket (without any intention of going back). We must think about these things.

If you want to get the Lord in this world, if you want nectar, you must throw all material desires away. You must have no interest, no desire for anything in this world—you must not even look in this direction. But we are living always busy with eating, sleeping, defending and breeding, always with busy with our wives, sons, brothers, friends, grandchildren, and we cannot leave material attachment. That is why it is said:

এ ঘোর-সংসারে পড়িয়া মানব
না পায় দুঃখের শেষ ।
সাধুসঙ্গ করি' হরি ভজে যদি
তবে অন্ত হয় ক্লেশ ॥

e ghora-samsare padiya manava
na paya duhkhera sesa
sadhu-sanga kari' hari bhaje yadi
tabe anta haya klesa

"Those who have fallen into this terrible world know no end of suffering, but if they associate with sadhus and serve Hari, their suffering comes to an end."

(Jaiva-dharma, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)

The misery you experience in this world will never end unless you take the association of sadhus.

visaya anale jvalichhe hrdaya
anale badaye anala
aparadha chhadi' laya krsna-nama
anale padaye jala

A fallen soul burns in the ever-increasing fire of mundanity. Avoiding offences, chant Krsna's Name. This pours water on the fire.

(Jaiva-dharma, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur)

If you pour water onto a fire, it will go out. When will our fire go out? When we give up offences and chant the Holy Name without offences. The problem is that when we chant the Holy Name, we only chant offences to the Holy Name. We are chanting the Holy Name so much, but why are we not getting any result? Because whatever we chant is all offences. Whether you chant ten rounds, sixteen rounds or twenty-four rounds, it is all offences of the Holy Name. There is Nama-aparadh in everything we do—we only chant the letters of the Holy Name.

asadhu-sange bhai krsna-nama nahi haya
namaksara bahiraya bate tabu nama kabhu naya

"Brother, the Name of Krishna cannot be chanted in bad association: it will no doubt sound like the letters of the Name, but it can never be the Name proper."

(Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, 7.1)

'সাধুসঙ্গ', 'সাধুসঙ্গ'—সর্ব্বশাস্ত্রে কয় ।
লবমাত্র সাধুসঙ্গে সর্ব্বসিদ্ধি হয় ॥

'sadhu-sanga', 'sadhu-sanga'—sarva sastre kaya
lava-matra sadhu sange sarva siddhi haya

"All scriptures keep saying, 'Good association', 'Good association'. You can attain all perfection even just by a drop of good, saintly association."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.22.54)

If we listen to Hari-katha and speak Hari-katha, then all offences will be removed from our hearts—our hearts will become pure, and our land will become fertile. If you have some land but do not cultivate it for twenty years, will anything grow on it if you suddenly sow, for example, mustard seeds? Only weeds will grow. Some seeds may sprout, but they will not grow higher than the grass. It is necessary to plough the land first. In the same way, you must first hear and hear Hari-katha and clean your heart—make it pure—through that. You will not get any result unless you make your heart pure. We are not told to just chant the Holy Name—we are told that we must chant the Holy Name without offences.

What to Give and What to Take
'Your wife is a servant of the Lord and if you take her prasad, then you will not have the ego of a master. You always take, but you must not take, you must give.. What can you give? You may have nothing, but you have sweet words, you have a heart.'

All paraphernalia, even the temple itself, is Nityananda Prabhu, the Lord Himself.
