No apathy, laziness, mundane talks and thoughts and lowly desires have any place whatsoever at a temple. It is necessary to go door to door and speak to ordinary people because it will be a test of Hari-kirtan. When you go to people's houses, how will you behave? Why are you sent there? Do you like to go to houses to look at girls? If people kick you out of their house, will you become disturbed? You have a wife at home, but if you see some girl at a house, will you get excited? For all these reasons, you must go house to house and be tested. At the same time, many householder devotees are in a very precarious position because they think, "If sadhus did not come to our houses, they would have nothing to fill their stomaches. They take our money, rice and potato and live on that."

When somebody chases you away, saying, "I will not give you anything! Go away from my house!" then your tolerance (like that of a tree: taror iva sahisnuna) will increase even more in your heart. They chase you away, but you must go there again and again. When you talk to them, it will increase your tolerance.

There is no difference between entering a temple and entering a house life if you enter it in a spiritual way. Those who live in a spiritual way always make sure that whatever they do is done for the worship of their Supreme Lord. Does entering a house mean that I give beads to somebody, and they go back to their house and eat fish, meat, onion, garlic and do not serve the Lord? This is not proper entering a house. When you make someone enter a house life and instruct them about this life, such people always remain engaged in the service to Sri Guru and Gauranga. This is what is called entering house life (grha-pravesa).

If somebody calls you and gives you 5,000 rupees to make a fire sacrifice, this is not preaching—your pocket becomes filled, but the people at the house where you come continue eating fish, meat, etc. You will have to suffer the result of this karma. One time, one sannyasi came to me in Puri and asked me, "Maharaj, why is my fate like this?" He had a house in Mayapur, which I was going to purchase. The man had a catering system for fire sacrifices—he would come to people's houses, and people could order a fire sacrifice for 5,000 rupees, 10,000 rupees, 100,000 rupees and so on. So, when he asked me that question, I told him, "Maharaj, you did business in all those houses doing fire sacrifices, and you now have to suffer the result of all that." Later, another person came to me and asked, "Maharaj, he is in a big trouble, please help him out. You have influence—his case is being heard at Krishna Nagar court." When I stayed at the Nabadwip temple in the early days, I knew one lawyer very well. He has become the district judge now. If I wanted, I could come and talk to him, but I said, "No. I will lose all respect in his eyes. I do not actually care if anybody respects me or not, but I will never do anything for some nara-pisachi [a man with instincts as abominable as those of necrophagous goblins], a so-called 'Ph.D. sadhu'." He is now in jail in Krishnanagar—he got five years in prison. Do you understand how one has to suffer the result of his own actions? He has to suffer the result of his previous life now, and if he still has material desires and seeks enjoyment in this life, then his fate will become even worse. Such people cheat others and become cheated themselves. Always remember this.
