(3) Perverted Taste

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Basirhat, morning, 29 January 2020, part 3
Translated from Bengali

We have forgotten Krishna since the time immemorial, having fallen into material, illusory bondage. We keep coming to this world again and again, and it is not sure if you will get a human birth easily again. In this birth, we have some intelligence to worship the Lord, to know the Lord. There are so many trees and insects in this world, but human intelligence is higher than the intelligence of other species. Those who are foolish have no intelligence, and they behave like children. Small children go through a period when they like to eat soil. What will the mother do? She will take the soil out of her child's mouth. Mother Yasoda also did that. Children do not understand this—they will cry, "I want to eat it!" We are like this too in this world. We cry, "I want a car", "I want much money." Like children, we do not understand anything. If you eat soil, your stomach will be upset. So, if you get all these cars, houses, money, wealth, you will not feel any peace or happiness. That is why, seeing that we are like children, the Lord says:

কৃষ্ণ কহে,—আমা ভজে, মাগে বিষয়-সুখ ।
অমৃত ছাড়ি’ বিষ মাগে,—এই বড় মূর্খ ॥
আমি-বিজ্ঞ, এই মূর্খে ‘বিষয়’ কেনে দিব ?
স্ব-চরণামৃত দিয়া ‘বিষয়’ ভুলাইব ॥

krsna kahe,—"ama bhaje, mage visaya-sukha
amrta chhadi' visa mage,—ei bada murkha
ami—vijna, ei murkhe 'visaya' kene diba?
sva-charanamrta diya 'visaya' bhulaiba"

"Krishna says, 'They worship Me desiring material happiness — leaving aside nectar, they ask for poison. They are big fools, but I am intelligent: Why will I give these fools material things? Instead, I will give them the nectar of My lotus feet and make them forget the material world.'"

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.22.38-39)

It is said here, "I will give them My lotus feet and make them forget about the material world." And what does Krishna Himself say in another place?

কৃষ্ণ যদি ছুটে ভক্তে ভুক্তি মুক্তি দিয়া ।
কভু ভক্তি না দেন রাখেন লুকাইয়া ॥

krsna yadi chhute bhakte bhukti mukti diya
kabhu prema-bhakti na dena rakhena lukaiya

"If devotees aspire for enjoyment or liberation, Krishna hides the knowledge about pure devotion from them and lets them go, giving them enjoyment or liberation."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.8.18)

So, on the one hand, Krishna says that He will give His lotus feet, and, on the other hand, Krishna says here that He will give enjoyment and liberation and take devotion away, "I will not give them devotion!" Both sayings are there, you can find them in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita. Both are true, but the Lord is so merciful! Dhruva Maharaj wanted to get his father's kingdom and throne, so he went to the forest to engage in severe austerities and began to pray to the Lord to fulfil his desire. The Lord does not come Himself, personally, so, becoming pleased with Dhruva Maharaj's determination, He first sent Narad Goswami to become his guru. After Dhruva Maharaj took initiation from Narad and started practising properly, trying to gain the Lord's favour, the Lord became even more pleased with him and even more merciful—He appeared in front of Dhruva Maharaj, saying, "Here is your kingdom, take it!" But Dhruva Maharaj refused. The Lord insisted, "Take it, take it! Why are you not taking your coveted kingdom?" Dhruva Maharaj replied with folded palms, "My Lord, I have got You, so I do not need any kingdom. I cannot even look at it." He lost all interest in the kingdom!

We too are like small children who like to eat soil, but the Lord does not let us eat it because we are His children. When the mother puts a sweet into her child's mouth instead of soil, then the child will understand that the sweet is better soil. We are also like that—when we taste the nectar of the Lord, we will not want anything else. In this world, if you get something, you start wanting something else after that. For example, if you like sweets, you can eat ten, fifteen, twenty sweets, but after that you will say, "I do not like it anymore." But the nectar of the Lord is such that if you get it, you will always want more, more and more, and no other desires or thoughts will remain within you—you will only keep trying to get more and more nectar of the Lord. You must always remember this.

If we hear about this nectar of the Lord—the nectar of talks about Him (kathamrta), the nectar of His ecstatic devotion (rasamrta)—all dirt will be removed from our hearts.

Sanatan Goswami:
Finishing Visaya
'Mahaprabhu was very happy, 'I am very happy to see his vairagyata, his renunciation. He was a chief minister, but now he suddenly wears old poor clothes and goes begging house to house. Sanatan is not shy, not ashamed—he has no ego.''

If we chant the Holy Name with our mouth, bad words and criticism of Vaishnavs
cannot come to our mouth.
