Importance of Hearing and Listening

You can see in Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita (3.20.8),

harse prabhu kahena,—"suna svarupa-rama-raya
nama-sankirtana—kalau parama upaya"

"In great jubilation, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said, 'My dear Svarup Damodar and Ramananda Ray, know from Me that chanting the Holy Names is the most feasible means of salvation in this age of Kali."

Chant the Holy Name, then you can be rescued from this kind of material world—you can go to the lotus feet of Lord Krishna and get service from the Lord.

The souls in this world always rely on other living entities. You know, we fast on Ekadasi, but when we wake up in the morning, we think, "When will I eat rice?" Last night, I was also thinking I would have some rice and go out at this hour. That is why it is said that in this world, we always rely on other living entities. Our hearts are sinful and dirty—we cannot keep any vows or practice any penance. Knowing this, Sri Gaura Hari, who is very merciful to the fallen souls, had revealed the means for all jiva souls to cleanse themselves and attain the Lord—these means are Nama sankirtan. If you practise this sankirtan, you can receive the treasure of divine love; if you attain this sankirtan, you can become rescued from this Kali-yuga and all its sins. We keep coming and going to this world, suffering from the three-fold miseries—if we want to save yourself from here, the only way to accomplish this is Harinam sankirtan.

Sincere devotees who practise kirtan always, at every step live under the control of their Gurupadpadma. This is how strong faith is born, followed by strong adherence (the person becomes very regulated in their spiritual life). Such devotees listen to what their Gurupadpadma says and taste the nectar of the Lord's Name, the nectar of the Lord's pastimes. When one reaches the embodiment of the main shelter, Sri Gurupadpadma, and practises hearing and chanting about the Lord, their heart becomes cleansed very soon and they grow attached to the strictly regulated service of the Lord. In other words, those who hear about the Lord from their Gurudev with heart and soul, very quickly become fixed in their spiritual life and develop attachment to the Lord and their service. Those who do not listen will not get this result.

How many people have taken shelter at the lotus feet of Gurudev? But did they listen to Gurudev? They did not, that is why their state is like this today. It is necessary to hear what Gurudev says; otherwise even if you are staying at Gurudev's feet, this is of no use. Gurudev said, "Many stay at my feet, but when somebody comes and gives some donation, they always watch how much money the person has given." I have seen this too. They watch, "How many dollars has Gurudev got today?" There are many who are staying just to see that...
