"The dumb can speak, the lame can climb a hill—all it takes is mercy from Gurudev."

(Bhavartha Dipika)

First, I am offering my full obeisance at the lotus feet of my Divine Master Om Vishnupad Jagad-guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, begging him for his causeless mercy and aspiring to serve him—

The people sitting over there are always talking. The souls who are averse to Lord Krishna have no knowledge or memory of Krishna. Conditioned souls, bound by illusion, can never remember or know Lord Krishna. Everyone is chanting kirtan, but they are talking—they do not chant the Holy Name at home; even when they come here for three-four days, they sit and do not chant, and when others are chanting, they are obstructing it. Who can be a greater offender than this, tell me? They come to the holy land of Nityananda Prabhu and behave like that...

You all know that Nityananda Prabhu rescued Jagai and Madhai, but Jagai and Madhai never made any Vaishnav-aparadh. They could kill, they could steal, but they had never made any offence to a Vaishnav, that is why they became rescued. You may ask, "Madhai beat Nityananda Prabhu. Is that not an offence to a Vaishnav (Vaishnav-aparadh)?" Had he not hit Nityananda Prabhu, would he be ever rescued? And if Nityananda Prabhu had not been hit by Madhai, would Nityananda Prabhu's glory be revealed in this world? Even when Nityananda Prabhu was beaten, He did not care—He kept saying again and again, "Say 'Krishna'!"

Jagai and Madhai were offenders of Sri Guru and Vaishnavs, but Nityananda Prabhu did not care. He kept saying, "You can beat Me; just say 'Krishna'! Say Krishna just once! Hare Krishna! Hari bol!" When Madhai was about to hit Nityananda Prabhu again, Jagai caught his hand and said, "There is no use beating a sannyasi. Do not hit Him." In the meantime, Haridas ran to Mahaprabhu's house at Barokona Ghat and told Him the news that Nityananda Prabhu had been hit in the head. Mahaprabhu became very angry and summoned Sudarshan Chakra, "Chakra! Chakra! Chakra!"—crying out to Sudarshan, He went to the place where Nityananda, Jagai and Madhai were. Seeing Mahaprabhu come with Sudarshan, Nityananda Prabhu told Him, "Prabhu, You said that You would not take up Your chakra in this Age of Kali—You promised to rescue people by giving them love and affection. In any case, Madhai has beaten Me, but Jagai has rescued Me!" Hearing this, Mahaprabhu embraced Jagai and showed him His four-armed form. When Jagai saw this divine form of the Lord, he became overwhelmed with ecstasy and fell unconscious.

Madhai saw Jagai cry, and his heart melted. He pleaded with Mahaprabhu, "Prabhu, will you not give Your mercy to me?" Mahaprabhu said, "No, You have hit My greatest friend whose body is more precious than My own. I cannot give you mercy, I cannot give you shelter in any high place." Madhai cried, "Then what will become of me?" Pointing at Nityananda Prabhu, Mahaprabhu replied, "Ask Him for forgiveness." Madhai fell at Nityananda Prabhu's feet, and Nityananda Prabhu embraced him. Do you know what He said? "I am giving whatever sukriti and punya I may have from My previous births to Madhai!"

After that, Madhai started chanting the Holy Name, and everybody was taken aback, "Such sinners as Jagai and Madhai have become rescued!" Then, Nityananda Prabhu told Madhai, "Make a ghat (a bathing place) here." We have been to that ghat. It is now known as Madhai Ghat. There is Barokona Ghat, and there is also Madhai Ghat in Mayapur. Jagai and Madhai went first to Barokona Ghat, where Mahaprabhu would come to bathe—they would sit and drink liquor there, so all women and men were afraid to go there. When Madhai build a new ghat, Nityananda Prabhu instructed him to stay at that ghat and guard and clean it.

Madhai did that. As he remembered his previous actions, he lamented, "O Lord! What will become of me?! My heart is bursting when I remember that I have hit You!" If you read Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata composed by Srila Vrindavan Das Thakur, you will see this described very beautifully there. Actually, in those days, there were no bathrooms, so people would pass stool on the bank of the Ganges. So, following Nityananda Prabhu's order, Madhai made a ghat and would clean it from stool. This is such a severe penance (tapasya)! But as the result of this penance, Madhai became a brahmachari—he became known as Madhav Brahmachari. He would take a spade and clean the bank of the Ganges from all stool. He did this kind of difficult service, as the result of which he became rescued and left this world.

Jay Jagai and Madhai ki jay!

Jagai and Madhai Prabhu became rescued by the mercy of Sri Nityananda Prabhu! Is there anyone as merciful as Nitai in this world? He rescues all the fallen, lowly souls like ourselves. We are stricken with so many faults and flaws. We live committing so many mistakes, amidst so many faults! How long we have been living committing mistakes, how many offences we have been committing birth after birth! We cannot concentrate our minds on what Vaishnavs say or on chanting the Holy Name. Our mind is always anxious, always naughty—our mind always judges the external world and is constantly swayed in different directions; we cannot still it. What is the solution then? Srila Prabhupad Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur said that if we chant kirtan loudly, then our mind will become still. Chant kirtan loudly always, all the time. Do not chant silently, in your mind. It is necessary to chant loudly, with full voice and heart. If you can sing fervently, it is even better because then others will get some benefit—it can enter the ears of those who do not chant the Holy Name.

Strong Foundation
A strong foundation in one's spiritual life is very important. How can it be built, and how can those who do not have such a strong foundation survive in their spiritual life?

What did Gurudev leave us here for? To fulfil his desire.

"HUMILITY, TOLERANCE, GIVING HONOUR TO OTHERS | HUMILITY, TOLERANCE, GIVING HONOUR TO OTHERS"
