(7/7) Control Your Urges

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Ekachakra Dham, noon festival class
Sri Nityananda-Trayodasi, 7 February 2020, part 7
Translated from Bengali

Every year, you have not been getting a place to stay, but were there any difficulties this year? Now you have big, spacious rooms, and everybody can sleep comfortably. I did not have to get mattresses this year because we got them last year, but the only problem is that you sleep on mattresses and then cannot wake up in the morning for mangal arati. [Devotees laugh. A devotee says: many are sleeping even now.] Oh? OK. Even if you are tired, you can chant kirtans and hear some Hari-katha; after that, if you feel tired, you will fall asleep quickly. But if you do not do anything, if you are lazy and sleep in the afternoon, then how will you sleep at night? You will not. When you take initiation, you promise in front of Agni (Fire), "I will not sleep in the daytime (diva nidra karibo na)." Keeping Fire as a witness, you say this...

I have never felt sleepy in the daytime, even when the body feels tired. Yesterday, I was very tired—I was proofreading and fell asleep forgetting even to put a blanket on; I fell asleep with the light on, a pen in my hand. When you are tired, sleep comes automatically...

Nobody prohibits you to sleep, but remember that the more you increase your sleep, food, fear and sex (ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithunam cha), the more it will increase. The more you eat, the more you will want to eat; and the less you eat, the less you will want to eat. The same is true about the urge of the mind, stomach, genitals, etc.—the more you indulge in these urges, the more they will increase. Remember this. We sing, "Chhaya vega dami'. Please subdue the six urges. Chhaya dosa sodhi'. Please rectify the six faults."

We had one godbrother, a sannyasi, who could eat seventy(!) luchis. Guru Maharaj said, "Your nature has not changed. People take you to their houses, but you come there and open their fridge without any shyness." The children and other family members may even eat meat in those families, but he would go there and open their fridge to see what food they have. That is why Guru Maharaj said, "When he is taken there, it is a big problem for me." This is jihva-vega: urge of the tongue. It is necessary to control all urges: the urge of the mind (mana-vega), tongue (jihva-vega), belly (udara-vega), genitals (upastha-vega), speech (vakya-vega) and anger (krodha-vega).

Anyhow, I will not take much of your time. We must sing 'Bhaja bhakata' now. I will come here and speak again in the evening, after the evening arati. Prasad will be distributed all day long today, until evening. Those who take prasad first, please come and help distribute it to others. We will also give prasad tomorrow in the afternoon, and there will be prasad for those who stay at the temple in the evening as well. If any of you want to stay at the temple, you can stay, and if anyone wants to stay permanently, you can contact me. Even if any ladies or children want to stay, I will arrange it for you—I will give you an opportunity to serve at the temple.

Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna. Hari bol.

[His Divine Grace chants 'Bhaja bhakata vatsala Sri Gaurahari' and the arati and concludes the noon festival programme celebrating the holy appearance day of Sriman Nityananda Prabhu.]

Start the Fire
'Answers to three question—accepting a guru, preaching to a child, and the meaning of Namabhas. 'You first start the fire, the wind will come!''

If somebody says, 'I have humility, tolerance, and I give honour to others,'
they are telling a lie.

"HUMILITY, TOLERANCE, GIVING HONOUR TO OTHERS | HUMILITY, TOLERANCE, GIVING HONOUR TO OTHERS"
