(7) Shameful

You must throw far away all the karma-kanda (material endeavours) and everything mundane that there is in this material world because all this can take you only up to liberation – it will turn you into a maidservant of Liberation (mukti-dasi). Spend your life in sadhu-sanga (association of saints). For as many days you are alive, if you feel any material attachment, you must feel ashamed of it.

সেই সব পাপ আর অপরাধ আমি ।
পরিহারে পাই লজ্জা, সব জান তুমি ॥

sei saba papa ara aparadha ami
parihare pai lajja, saba jana tumi

'I feel ashamed to ask for forgiveness for all my sins and offences – You know everything.

'I am such a great offender, I feel so ashamed!' – such humility must come to us. 'I am the biggest offender in the world, I am the greatest sinner, but I am not even trying to give up my offences and sins! It makes me feel even more ashamed. I am not even trying hard!' This is the truth, is it not?

We must think about these things. We have been averse to the Lord since time immemorial, but our Sri Gurupadpadma comes and gives us some mercy, but if we cannot keep this mercy, then what will become of us? Gurudev keeps trying to rescue such fallen souls as us. He goes door to door in this world and chants Hari-kirtan, but how much are we trying to listen to it? How much desire do we have to hear it? How much are we trying to serve? If you consider how much you are trying, then you will understand what your mood of devotion is. How much are you trying? How much desire do you have to hear this Hari-katha or to do service to the Lord? You must keep this in your mind.

Hare Krishna. You have heard a lot today. I will say one–two more things and finish. You must have understood why we come, why we walk house to house.

We became averse to Lord Krishna a very long time ago – we have become forgetful of the Lord; we have forgotten the Lord. Falling into the illusory bondage of Maya, we forget that we belong to Krishna. Instead of belonging to Krishna, we have become servants and maidservants of Maya and follow her orders. We work for Maya, but we were supposed to be working for the Lord. Always remember this. We are working for Maya. But Gurudev mercifully takes us out of slavery to Maya and makes us members of Krishna's family...
