*** has been telling me for a long time, 'Gurudev, please come to my house one day.' I said, 'All right, when the environment becomes normal again, I will come.' So, I promised to come this Friday. This Tuesday I went to Nabadwip from Kolkata, I spent there one day. From there, I went to Ekachakra Dham, Nitai's Dham, the holy birthplace of Sriman Nityananda Prabhu in Birchandrapur. I started out from there yesterday in the morning, stopping at our Betur Temple on the way to take prasad. Then, in the evening, I came here. I said that I would come here on the way to Uluberia. We are building a temple in Uluberia now (the works are going on now), and the devotees are waiting for me. I will go there this afternoon.

Anyhow, you have come here today to hear some Hari-katha from me. Many people say many things in this world, but you will not find many people who will tell you about who you are (atma-tattva jnana, or atma-tattva vit, atma-katha) and about your highest benefit. [Clamour] Quite. Please do not speak, sit quietly a little. If you speak, I will not be able to speak Hari-katha. I did not come here to listen to gramya-katha, gramya-varta, prajalpa and all kinds of nonsense. I have come here for one or one and a half hours to speak Hari-katha. If you listen to it, you will get great benefit. If you listen to it now, you will get benefit later. I am going to tell you Bhagavat-katha, which Pariksit Maharaj listened to for seven days from Sukadev Goswami. I cannot tell you the whole seven-day discourse in one and a half hour, so I will only sprinkle some drops of it and go.

It is Katik Month, Kirtika-nandini's most favourite month now. Kirtika-nandini is Srimati Radharani. It is trayodashi-tithi. This Damodar month is very dear to the Lord. We sing this Damodar kirtan every day, in the morning and evening (if somebody can do it only once a day, they do it once a day):

নমামীশ্বরং সচ্চিদানন্দরূপং
লসৎ-কুণ্ডলং গোকুলে ভ্রাজমানং ।

namamisvaram sach-chid-ananda rupam
lasat-kundalam gokule bhrajamanam

'To the Supreme Lord, whose form is the embodiment of eternal existence, knowledge, and bliss, whose shark-shaped earrings are swinging to and fro, who is beautifully shining in the divine realm of Gokula....'

In this Damodar Month, on the navami-tithi (the ninth lunar day), Mother Yasoda bound Lord Krishna. Damodar means 'dam-yog-udar'. 'Dam' means rope, 'udar' means belly. Mother Yasoda tied Lord Krishna with a rope. When she tried to do it, the rope was at first always two fingers too short. One finger means desire, and the other finger means mercy. If you want to get the mercy of Gurudev, Vaishnavs or the Lord, it is necessary to make some effort (it is necessary to want it and to try to get it). If I try to make one step towards the Lord, I will be able to get His mercy. And if I do not try, I will not be able to get it. Therefore, we must have desire. We must be determined, 'I will continue doing my service', 'I will continue chanting the Holy Name.'

You can be sitting right here and speaking on the phone with people who are staying in London or America. There is a TV channel office in Kolkata, but you can see their broadcast on your TVs here. You can listen to radiogram. All these things are possible through the medium of sound. If we can connect with somebody who is thousands of miles away through the medium of sound that travels through ether, then why can we not connect with the Lord through the sound vibration that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has brought to this world?

হরের্নাম হরের্নাম হরের্নামৈব কেবলম্ ।
কলৌ নাস্ত্যেব নাস্ত্যেব নাস্ত্যেব গতিরন্যথা ॥

harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha

'Chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name, chanting the Holy Name. There is no other way, no other way, no other way.'

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.7.76)

The Hare Krishna maha-mantra is a sound vibration. If we can chant this sound vibration sincerely, conscientiously and without offences, why can we not reach the Lord? This is what our Guru and Vaishnavs tell us. We can reach the Lord through the medium of the Holy Name if we can chant the Holy Name genuinely. The problem is that when we chant the Holy Name, what we chant is not the Holy Name:

অসাধুসঙ্গে ভাই কৃষ্ণনাম নাহি হয় ।

নামাক্ষর বাহিরায় বটে তবু নাম কভু নয় ॥

asadhu-sange bhai krsna-nama nahi haya
namaksara bahiraya bate tabu nama kabhu naya

'Brother, the Name of Krishna cannot be chanted in bad association: it will no doubt sound like the letters of the Name, but it can never be the Name proper.'

If you want to chant the Holy Name, then you must know:

'সাধুসঙ্গ', 'সাধুসঙ্গ'—সর্ব্বশাস্ত্রে কয় ।
লবমাত্র সাধুসঙ্গে সর্ব্বসিদ্ধি হয় ॥

'sadhu-sanga', 'sadhu-sanga'—sarva sastre kaya
lava-matra sadhu sange sarva siddhi haya

'All scriptures keep saying, "Good association", "Good association". You can attain all perfection even just by a drop of good, saintly association.'

It must be the association of a genuine sadhu. It must not be a sadhu who is after your money.
