(8/8) Step on Clean Path

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Noon preaching programme in Adra,
13 November 2020, part 8
Translated from Bengali

There are four things that are prohibited. (1) Gambling (dyuta), (2) intoxicants (pana), (3) illicit sex (striya), (4) slaughter (suna). What is gambling? It means playing dice, cards, betting. Intoxicants include alcohol, cannabis, hash, bidi, cigarettes and even tea. Illicit sex means you have a wife, but you mix with other ladies, or you have a husband, but you mix with other men. Finally, slaughter means killing jivas. You can understand why it is bad to kill others. Unless you stop doing these four things, you cannot come to this path. You must not eat fish, meat, onion, garlic, eggs and lentils (masoori dal).

You think, 'Oh, if I do not eat all this, how will I live?' Look at us – are we not alive? You can look at the Western boys here with us, they have been vegetarian since their birth. Their parents are initiated disciples, so they never ate meat and other non-vegetarian things even in their mother's womb. In their countries, people eat raw beef (they are not Muslim – Christians eat beef there). But they come from those countries here and wear tilaks, neckbeads, chant the Holy Name, eat vegetarian food and fast on ekadasi. We should learn from them. But you all live right here, and what do you do? When your ponds dry, you jump to grab the fish from it. People eat all these things here, killing jivas. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. If you kill something in this life, it will come to kill you in your future life. For example, if you cut a chicken, you will have to be born as a chicken, and the chicken you killed will be born as a human and kill you. I am not joking. I am telling you what the scriptures say. Meat (mamsa) means 'mam' (I) plus 'sa' (he). If I kill something in this life, it will kill me in a future life. There is no way to avoid it. You think, 'Whatever. I will see when I die! I will eat nicely now.' That means cats and dogs eat whatever they see, and you also eat in the same way.

You know, one day Indra was cursed to be born as a pig. Vaishnav gurus never curse anyone, but Indra's sakta-guru, Brihaspati, cursed him. Indra was having a good time with Durga, Kali, Saraswati, apsaras, Laksmi and other goddesses, but when his guru came, he did not pay any attention to him. Then, Brihaspati said, 'So, Indira, you have got your heaven and have forgotten me! I curse you to be born as a pig in your next life.' What do pigs do? They only look for stool and sit amidst it, eating. So, when Indra heard his guru's curse, he asked him, 'What can I do now?' Then, Brahma came and said, 'I will come as your guru and rescue you.' So, when Indra was born as a pig, Brahma came and called him, 'O Indra, come, come quickly!' Annoyed, Indra brushed him off, 'Do not disturb me! I am eating! I am hungry.' Indra thrusted his nose into some stool and scooped a mouthful. Indra had forgotten everything and was happy eating stool.

We too were such pigs. Now when you pass stool, you feel disgusted to even look at it – you carry it first in your stomach, but once you pass it, you hold your hose. But we were pigs before, too. We have gone through that. As you sow, so you reap. If you do not want to get such births again, then say all together:

হরে কৃষ্ণ হরে কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ হরে হরে ।
হরে রাম হরে রাম রাম রাম হরে হরে ॥

hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare
hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare

Nitai Gaura Hari bol! Nitai Gaura Hari bol! Nitai Gaura Hari bol! Nitai Gaura Hari bol!

Jay Gurudev.

Sanatan-siksa: Six Limbs of Surrender
'Acceptance of the favorable, rejection of the unfavorable, the faith that 'He will surely protect me,' embracing the Lord's guardianship, complete dependence on Him, and the perception of one's utter helplessness without Him.'

The taste for the Holy Name will not come if I have some material desire in my heart.
