(9/9) Taking the Holy Name

The Lord's Name, form, qualities, pastimes, associates and paraphernalia are completely non-different from the Lord, that is why nobody except for the Lord or His close associates can distribute this Holy Name.

This Holy Name has come from Goloka Vrindavan. Brahma received this Holy Name from Krishna, then Narad received it from Brahma, Vyasadev received it from Narad, Madhvacharya received it from Vyasadev. In this way, this Holy Name eventually came to Madhavendra Puri, then Ishwar Puri received it from Madhavendra Puri, and Mahaprabhu received it from Ishwar Puri. Later, Srila Jagannath Das Babaji Maharaj, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur, Srila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji Maharaj, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur, our Param Gurudev Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj and my Gurudev Om Vishnupad Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj, who told me in his lifetime that if anybody wanted to receive this Holy Name and genuinely follows all rule and regulations, I could give it to them.

Before you take the Holy Name, you must know about the four rules and regulations. (1) Do not gamble (do not bet, do not play chess, dice and cards); (2) do not take intoxicants (paan, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, bidi, tea); (3) do not mix unlawfully with men; (4) do not kill any living entities (do not eat fish, meat, garlic, onion, masoor dal). You must offer bhog to the Lord and take prasad. Do you eat paan? Do not eat it. Paan is not only some leaves; there is limestone (চুন), catechu (খয়ের), betel nut (সুপারি). It spoils teeth, tongue and lungs. It is bad for health. It also contains zarda tobacco (জর্দা), which even more harmful.

When you chant the Holy Name, you must chant out loud. Do not chant with your mouth closed. When you call your mother, you call her loudly.

This big bead on top is called sumeru. Every time you take your beads to chant on them, you must first chant:

শ্রীকৃষ্ণচৈতন্য প্রভু নিত্যানন্দ ।
শ্রীঅদ্বৈত গদাধর শ্রীবাসাদি গৌরভক্তবৃন্দ ॥

sri krishna chaitanya prabhu nityananda
sri advaita gadadhara srivasadi gaura bhakta-vrinda

This is Pancha-tattva's Name. We cannot do anything without their mercy. They have brought this Holy Name to this abode, so before we chant the Holy Name, we must first take their names. Then, give 'jay' to Gurudev and begin chanting on the beads, starting from the big beads:

হরে কৃষ্ণ হরে কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ কৃষ্ণ হরে হরে ।
হরে রাম হরে রাম রাম রাম হরে হরে ॥

hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare

Chant in this way on each bead, from the big beads to the small beads, then turn the beads and chant from the small beads to the big beads. When you come to the last bead, you must turn the beads and start chanting the next round from the last bead (do not cross the sumeru bead). Chant in this way sixteen rounds a day. If you can chant more, it is good, but you must chant minimum four rounds a day. Your beads must never fast.

If you have any problem (ladies' monthly problem, health problems and so on), you must not leave the Lord's service – you can water Tulasi, chant on your beads and do other services. No matter what happens, you must not stop chanting on your beads every day.

There are also ten offences. Why do people chant the Holy Name but do not get the result quickly? Because they make offences. The first offence is sadhu-ninda (criticising sadhus). The second offence is to compare Lord Krishna to Lord Siva. The third offence is to consider your guru an ordinary mortal man. You will find all the offences, as well as the glories of the Holy Name, in this book. Learn the ten offences by heart and avoid them. If you chant the Holy Name in this way, you will get the result quickly.
