(3) Purpose of Birth

Soon, on 1 January, there will be guru-puja (the appearance day of our Gurudev) at our temple in Nrisingha Palli. We will be making a big festival on this day. This time, we have already made thirty more rooms at the temple (in the new building), and thirty-eight more rooms will be ready by Gaura Purnima. There are fifty rooms available now, there is no problem with accommodation. I am inviting all the devotees for Gurudev's guru-puja festival. I do not consider my puja (worship) greater than my guru's puja, that is why I want to make this festival very nicely. Vaishnavs comes every year to Nrisingha Palli, and they will come this time, too. And I am also inviting all devotees to come and join this festival.

There is another thing you must always remember. Guru Maharaj told it very nicely, citing Vishnu Purana:

জলজা নবলক্ষাণি স্থাবরা লক্ষবিংশতি
কৃময়োরুদ্রসঙ্খকাঃ পক্ষিণাং দশলক্ষনম্
ত্রিংশললক্ষাণি পশবঃ চতুরলক্ষাণি মানুষাঃ

jalaja nava-laksani sthavara laksa-vimsati
krmayo rudra-sankhyakah paksinam dasa-laksanam
trimsal-laksani pasavah chatur-laksani manusah

'There are 900,000 aquatic species; 2,000,000 nonmoving living entities (trees, plants, etc.); 1,100,000 species of insects and reptiles; 1,000,000 species of birds; 3,000,000 species of beasts; and 400,000 species of humans.'

(Padma Purana, Vishnu Purana)

I am telling now primary things for those who have not come to this line yet. The meaning of this verse is that we have travelled through 8,400,000 species before getting this human birth. Among all those 8,400,000 species, we were born 900,000 times in water (as various kinds of fish, crocodiles, whales, etc.), 2,000,000 times as various trees, plants, hills and other nonmoving entities, 1,100,000 times as worms, insects, snakes, etc., 1,000,000 times as various birds flying in the sky, 3,000,000 times as cows, goats, sheep, cats, pigs and other animals, and 400,000 times as humans. We have been born 400,000 times as humans: sometimes, we were born in India; sometimes, in Bangladesh; sometimes, in Russia; sometimes, in London; sometimes, in Pakistan; sometimes in Garo, Khasi or Naga. Having gone through all those births, we have now got this birth in India. The meaning of this life is to do good for others. What does it mean? 'Doing good for others' means that we must practise Krishna consciousness.

It is written in the scriptures:

সর্ব্বধর্ম্মান্ পরিত্যজ্য মামেকং শরণং ব্রজ ।
অহং ত্বাং সর্ব্বপাপেভ্যো মোক্ষয়িষ্যামি মা শুচঃ ॥

sarva-dharman parityajya, mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo, moksayisyami ma suchah

'Give up all kinds of religion and surrender to Me alone. I will liberate you from all sins, do not despair.'

(Srimad Bhagavad-gita, 18.66)

'Leave all religions and only surrender to Me. I will take care of you. I will take care of all your sins.' How does one practise Krishna consciousness? First, it is necessary to take shelter at the holy feet of a bona fide guru. Then, you should chant the Holy Name in the association of saints. The Lord Himself says that His Name will be spread in every village and town of the world (prithivite achhe yata nagaradi grama sarvatra prachara haibe mora nama; পৃথিবীতে আছে যত নগরাদি গ্রাম সর্ব্বত্র প্রচার হইবে মোর নাম), but who preached this Name in this world? Guru-varga, who are all Mahaprabhu's associates. Mahaprabhu sent His own associates to this world to preach His Holy Name to such fallen souls as us (tava nija-jan kona mahajane pathaiya dile tumi; তব নিজ-জন কোন মহাজনে পাঠাইয়া দিলে তুমি). I am a very fallen soul, but Gurudev rescued me from the bondage of illusion (Maya) and brought me to this world. But for him, I would not be sitting here now, I would not be able to be saying these things to you. It is possible only by the mercy of Sri Gurupadpadma, Guru Maharaj, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu – by the mercy of the guru, Vaishnavs and the Lord. I am telling you Mahaprabhu's message, and I am praying to you all: please practise Krishna consciousness.
