(7/14) Nityananda Prabhu's Mercy

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Uluberia, 12 January 2021, part 7
Translated from Bengali

Sri Nityananda Prabhu is so merciful! It is said about Him in the scriptures:

উত্তম, অধম, কিছু না করে বিচার ।
যে আগে পড়য়ে, তারে করয়ে নিস্তার ॥

uttama, adhama, kichhu na kare vichara
ye age padaye, tare karaye nistara

‘Nityananda Prabhu does not judge who is good and who is bad: He saves anyone who falls before Him.’

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.5.208)

He does not consider whether one is high or low, whether one is born in a noble family or a low family, or anything else – Nityananda Prabhu rescues anyone who falls at His feet. Such is His mercy! That is why Mahaprabhu told Him:

শুন শুন নিত্যানন্দ, শুন হরিদাস ।
সর্ব্বত্র আমার আজ্ঞা করহ প্রকাশ ॥
প্রতি ঘরে ঘরে গিয়া কর এই ভিক্ষা ।
‘বল কৃষ্ণ, ভজ কৃষ্ণ, কর কৃষ্ণ শিক্ষা’ ॥

suna suna nityananda, suna haridasa
sarvatra amara ajna karaha prakasa
prati ghare ghare giya kara ei bhiksa
‘bala krsna, bhaja krsna, kara krsna siksa’

‘Listen, listen, Nityananda! Listen, Haridas! Make My command known everywhere! Go house to house and beg everyone, “Please chant Krishna’s Name, worship Krishna and practise Krishna’s teachings.”’

(Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata, 2.13.8–9)

Mahaprabhu said, ‘Go house to house and preach about the Lord, about Krishna!’ – and Nityananda Prabhu went to each and every house, urging everyone:

ভজ গৌরাঙ্গ, কহ গৌরাঙ্গ, লহ গৌরাঙ্গের নাম রে
যে জন গৌরাঙ্গ ভজে, সেই আমার প্রাণ রে

bhaja gauranga, kaha gauranga, laha gaurangera nama re
ye jana gauranga bhaje, sei amara prana re

‘Worship Gauranga! Say Gauranga! Take Gauranga’s Name! Those who worship Gauranga are My heart and soul!’

(Sri Nityananda Prabhu)

This is what He preached everywhere. You have heard that one day when He came to Madhai Ghat, Madhai hit Him with a clay wine bottle. When Haridas Thakur told Mahaprabhu the news, Mahaprabhu became very angry and, calling His Sudarshan chakra (‘Chakra, chakra, chakra!’), ran to the place. But when He came, Nityananda Prabhu stopped Him, ‘Prabhu, You have promised that You would not take up any weapons in Kali-yuga. Do not be angry. Madhai hit Me, but Jagai has stood up for Me.’ After that, Nityananda Prabhu prayed to Mahaprabhu with all His heart, ‘Prabhu, You have come to rescue this world. I have never asked You for anything, but today I am asking You: please give Me Madhai as alms.’ Mahaprabhu replied, ‘Nitai, when You ask for something, I cannot refuse You.’ Then, Madhai fell at Nityananda Prabhu’s feet, and after that Mahaprabhu embraced him. Do you know what kind of service Mahaprabhu gave Madhai? There used to be no bathrooms in those days, so people would come to pass stool on the bank of the Ganges. Mahaprabhu told Madhai to clean the bank of the Ganges, and Madhai would take a spade and clean the bank from all stool. This is the kind of service he got from Mahaprabhu. That is how that bathing place eventually became known as ‘Madhai Ghat’ or ‘Jagai-Madhai Ghat’ (now the Ganges is dry in that place – the course of the river has changed).

This is the meaning of mercy. When you receive service, you receive mercy…

Tolerance vs. Chastity
'When you have that kind of love and affection to your Guru, Deity, and Vaishnavs, at that time there are no rules and regulations. Humility, tolerance, giving honour to others is the rule, but when you see there is some problem, it is not the time for tolerance.'

You must understand that if you want to make others happy, you must follow the proper conception.
