(8/16) Sri Nityananda Prabhu's Eccentricity

When Mahaprabhu took sannyas, He first came to Sri Advaita Acharya Prabhu’s house, and from there He was going to go to Vrindavan, but then He changed His mind and finally went to Puri. On the way to Puri, Sri Nityananda Prabhu contrived a plan.

You know, one time, there was Sachi Mata, Vishnupriya Devi and a few other devotees gathered at Mahaprabhu’s home (Mahaprabhu had not taken sannyas then). Suddenly, Sri Nityananda Prabhu came in stark naked! Vishnupriya Devi became shy and went inside into a room, and Mahaprabhu took a cloth and put it on Sri Nityananda Prabhu. Sri Nityananda Prabhu has no sense – He is not aware whether He is dressed or naked, whether there are women or girls in the room…

So, I was telling you about Mahaprabhu going to Puri. Mahaprabhu went to Puri with Mukunda, Sri Nityananda Prabhu and a few other devotees. He ran down the road like a madman, and Sri Nityananda Prabhu somehow tricked Mahaprabhu into giving Him His danda. Getting Mahaprabhu’s danda, He broke it into three pieces and threw it into the Bhargi River.

When they reached Atharnala, Mahaprabhu asked Him, ‘Nitai, where is My danda?’

‘Prabhu, the way You are going, chanting the Name of Jagannath and running like a man elephant… Intoxicated with transcendental love, You fell down on Your danda, and it broke into three pieces. So, I threw it into the Bhargi,’ Sri Nityananda Prabhu lied.

Mahaprabhu became angry.

‘I have left everything in this world and did not bring anything from Nabadwip. I had only My danda with Me, and You have broken it?! Nityananda, You know why I have taken sannyas! You know everything!’

‘Yes, I know, I know,’ said Nityananda Prabhu. ‘You are a make-believe sannyasi. Is it necessary for the Lord to take sannyas?’

Mahaprabhu stopped Him, ‘Hey, what are You saying? Do not say such things!’ Then, He turned to everyone and said, ‘I will not go with you all. Either you go first and I will go behind, or I will go first and you must go later. Decide what you will do.’

Everybody thought, ‘If we go first, we will not see which way Prabhu goes. Better He goes first, and we will follow Him.’

They told about their decision to Mahaprabhu, and Mahaprabhu began to walk so fast that the devotees could not catch up with Him even though they ran.

In this way, Mahaprabhu arrived at the temple of Lord Jagannath. He ran into the temple, saying all the time, ‘Ja-ja-ga-ga, Ja-ja-ga-ga’. There was foam coming out of His mouth. Seeing a madman enter the temple and trying to come too close to the Deities, the temple guards rushed to beat Mahaprabhu, but they could not. In the end, Srila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya ordered the guards, ‘Whoever He is, let Him be. Take Him to my house.’ And you all know what happened after that. There is a book, Sri Puri Dham Mahatmya-mukta-mala. Everything is there. Mahaprabhu ended up rescuing Srila Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya.

This is the pastime of Sri Nityananda Prabhu breaking Mahaprabhu’s danda. There are so many things described about Sri Nityananda Prabhu.
