(9/16) Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami's Gratitude
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
This book, Sri Nityananda Mahimamrita, contains the words of our Param Guru Maharaj (Om Vishnupad Srila B.R. Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj) and our Gurudev (Om Vishnupad Srila B.S. Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj). You can read this book. There are very nice things described in it. Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami said, ‘I have got Sri Vrindavan Dham by the mercy of Sri Nityananda Prabhu. He ordered me to come here, saying that I would get all possible benefit there.’ I told you yesterday about Gunarnava Misra and Ramdas Minaketan. Ramdas Minaketan was Sri Nityananda Prabhu’s servant, but Gunarnava Misra committed an offence to him. Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami’s brother was doing a whole-day-and-night kirtan (similar to the asta-prahar kirtans that people do these days – there is nothing except nama-aparadha in such chanting). Many people assembled at their house that night, and when Ramdas came, everybody offered their obeisances and much respect to him because he was Sri Nityananda Prabhu’s servitor. But Gunarnava Misra showed him no respect. Ramdas Minaketan thought, ‘What is he doing? My hair stands on end just by thinking about it! He is an atheist! He is giving honour to one person and gives no honour to another person. This is a half-hen logic (ardha-kukkuti-nyaya)!’ I told you yesterday what this half-hen logic is. Gurudev explained it to me. When I asked Gurudev, ‘What does ardha-kukkuti mean?’ he said it meant that a hen drops eggs from its backside and eats with its mouth, so you think, ‘OK, I will keep the backside since it brings eggs, and I will throw the rest away because it is useless!’ Giving honour to one and not giving honour to the other is same as being an atheist. In other words, Gunarnava Misra gave honour to Mahaprabhu but gave no honour to Sri Nityananda Prabhu. They are one, so what he did is nothing but displaying atheism. Ramdas Minaketan explained this to Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami, and Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami quarrelled with his brother. In the end, he told his brother, ‘I want to have nothing to do with you. Do as you like,’ and went to bed. At night, Sri Nityananda Prabhu came to him in a dream and said, ‘Wake up, wake up, Krishna Das! Do not stay in Jhamatpur any longer. Come to Vrindavan! Do not keep any connection with your brother.’ This is how, in his old age, Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami came to Vrindavan, where he wrote Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita. He said:
এই গ্রন্থ লেখায় মোরে ‘মদনমোহন’ ।
ei grantha lekhaya more ‘madana-mohana’ ‘Sri Madan Mohan is writing this scripture through me. My writing is like the repetition of a parrot.’ (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.8.78) When Sri Nityananda Prabhu first came to Nabadwip, Mahaprabhu told all the devotees that a great personality had come, but nobody could find Him. Then, Mahaprabhu personally took everybody to Sri Nandan Acharya’s house. There, they saw a beautiful figure of extraordinary effulgence sitting at the veranda and understood, ‘Oh, this is that great personality Mahaprabhu was talking about!’ That was the first meeting of Sri Nityananda Prabhu and Sriman Mahaprabhu. We always go to Nandan Acharya’s house during Sri Nabadwip Dham parikrama. Srila Krishna Das Kaviraj Goswami wrote, ‘I have got Sri Vrindavan Dham by the mercy of Sri Nityananda Prabhu. He ordered me to come here, saying that I would get all possible benefit there. When I came here, I attained the lotus feet of Sri Radha-Madan-mohan, Sri Radha-Govinda, Sri Radha-Gopinath. What is more, I attained the super-mercy of Mahaprabhu’s dearmost devotees Srila Rupa Goswami, Srila Sanatan Goswami, Srila Jiva Goswami and Srila Raghunath Das Goswami. They all embraced me, and I have got Sri Rupa-Raghunath’s mercy.’ When he wrote Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, he wrote in every chapter:
শ্রীরূপ-রঘুনাথ-পদে যার আশ ।
sri-rupa-raghunatha-pade yara asa ‘Always aspiring after the lotus feet of Sri Rupa and Raghunath, Krishna Das is narrating this Chaitanya-charitamrita (“nectar of Chaitanya’s character”).’ (Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 1.1.110; repeated at the end of every chapter)
