(1/11) Supremely Worshippable Day
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Jay Om Vishnupad Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami
Maharaj ki jay. Devotee: Jay Om Vishnupad Paramahamsa Jagad-Guru Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj ki jay. Harinam sankirtan ki jay. Nitai Gaura premanande Hari bol. Today is a very fortunate day for us. We always wait for this day very much every year – the holy worshippable day when our supremely worshippable Sriman Nityananda Prabhu chose to come to this world. We, especially all devotees of Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu, usually have very special regard for the holy day of Gaura Purnima (Bengali people call this day ‘dol purnima’), but today is the holy appearance day of Sriman Nityananda Prabhu – He without whose mercy this world is plunged into darkness, He without whose mercy we do not see, and will never see, any light, He without whose mercy the door to Goloka Vrindavan will never open for us, He without whose mercy we can never become saved from this illusory environment. Sriman Nityananda Prabhu accepted Sriman Hadai Pandit and Srimati Pamavati Devi as His parents and appeared on this holy day in this world in the Age of Kali to rescue all the lowly, fallen souls such as ourselves. Therefore, this day, Sri Nityananda-trayodasi, is an extremely worshippable day for us. Many different sampradayas are observing this holy Nityananda-trayodasi day, but our Gaudiya sampradaya observes this day beautifully, with heart and soul, extracting and smearing mellows of deep love from their hearts. You, too, come here every year with much enthusiasm and, hopefully, will come next year, too. Many of you have got an opportunity to come and be here from the dasami-tithi, which is very good, there is no problem with that. You came one–two days earlier and got an opportunity to stay at Sriman Nityananda Prabhu’s holy abode, and we have also got this opportunity owing to you. I usually do not get time to come here often because I have to visit all the other temples. This is how my time passes. But because you all came before the festival, I too came here a few days earlier and got an opportunity to hear the nectarean narratives about this holy dham (mahima-charita-amrita, mahima-amrita, mahima-katha). This is an extremely pure land, non-different from Sri Vrindavan Dham. Just as everyone says, ‘Jay Radhe Radhe’ in Vrindavan, everyone here says, ‘Jay Nitai’. When people meet each other here, they say, ‘Jay Nitai’. Nityananda Prabhu’s Name is uttered here all the time.
নিতাই না বলিল মুখে, মজিল সংসার সুখে,
nitai na balila mukhe, majila samsara sukhe, ‘You have never uttered Nitai’s Name, living immersed in material pleasures – do you think your education and noble birth will save you?’ (Srila Narottam Das Thakur) We are very proud of our knowledge. We are always controlled by our ego, proud of our wealth, knowledge, bodily beauty and material qualities. This is how we become mad with pride and forget Nitai’s lotus feet (‘ahankare matta haina, Nitai-pada pasariya’). I have seen Gurudev’s pastimes. One time, when Gurudev had an operation in Kolkata, I saw him being taken to the operation theatre. I cried to see him suffer so much. There was about forty-five minutes before the operation, and Gurudev told the nurse to allow foreign devotees (his servants) to stay. Seeing our crying faces, Gurudev only started chanting kirtan. Lying on the stretchers, dressed in the hospital clothes, he was chanting:
নিতাই পদ-কমল, কোটীচন্দ্র-সুশীতল,
nitai pada-kamala, koti-chandra-susitala, ‘The whole world is soothed in the shade of Nitai’s lotus feet, which are as cooling as ten million moons. Brother, it is not possible to come to Radha-Krishna without this Nitai. Firmly grasp Nitai’s feet!’ (Srila Narottam Das Thakur) It is necessary to have the strongest faith. If you do not have a very strong faith, you will not have faith in Nitai. People sing at marketplaces:
যদ্যপি আমার গুরু বেশ্যা-বাড়ি যায় ।
yadyapi amara guru vesya-bari yaya ‘Even if my guru Nityananda Ray goes to a prostitute’s house, He is still my guru.’ This is what faith is.
