তদ্­বিদ্ধি প্রণিপাতেন পরিপ্রশ্নেন সেবয়া ।
উপদেক্ষ্যন্তি তে জ্ঞানং জ্ঞানিনস্তত্ত্বদর্শিনঃ ॥

tad viddhi pranipatena, pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam, jnaninas tattva-darsinah

Question: What is the number of threads that brahmacharis should have in their brahman thread? I sometimes hear from the devotees that we are using six threads...

No, nine threads, not six. If any of you do not have nine-thread brahman thread and you cannot make it there, then I can send you some brahman threads because if your brahman thread is broken, the scripture say that you cannot talk until you have worn a new thread. So, everybody who has taken the second initiation must always keep an extra thread with them. If your brahman thread breaks, you cannot speak—you can talk only after you change the brahman thread, wear another one (take the old one off through your legs and put on a new thread) and recite the gayatri. First you must recite the gayatri, then only can you talk to anyone else. This is the rule set by the scriptures. Hari-bhakti-vilas says this. If your brahman thread is broken, you cannot talk—first wear a new one, then recite the gayatri, and only after that you can talk. That is rule.

So, if you need, I can send you some brahman threads. The brahman threads we use are hand-made because what they sell at the market is not made well. Our sannyasis Sripad Niriha Maharaj, Sripad Vishnu Maharaj, Sripad Sadhu Maharaj know how to make them, Kamalendu Prabhu also knows. I myself do not know how to make it, I have never done it in my life, but they know it, they make and practise all this. I have never made a brahman thread because my brahman thread has never broken. Everybody's brahman thread breaks after a few months, but mine has never broken. I never take it out and always use soap when taking bath, etc. but it has never broken, it is still the same as it was. It has never broken in my life...
