Lacking Mercy or Lacking Faith?

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Russia, 11 August 2003

Through faith, we get good association. Good association cleans us. You can see that a magnet always attracts iron, but if the iron is full of dust, full of rust, then the magnet cannot touch it. We are full of dust at present, and if we get good association, that dust will be cleaned.

Guru Maharaj always says that when you come in Krishna consciousness life, nobody is going to give you an examination to show your progress. You can do this examination yourself. How? Ask yourself: Do you want to hear Krishna-katha, hear a good lecture, want to read the scriptures, or does your mind always go anywhere and everywhere? If you check yourself, you can understand whether you are proceeding (developing, going forward) or decreasing (going backward). If you feel your mind is always fickle, it always goes everywhere, your mind is not in the lecture, not in the scriptures, you do not like chanting the Holy Name, then you can understand yourself whether you are proceeding or going backward.

Taking about good faith, I am remembering Mukunda Prabhu's name. He is Mahaprabhu's associate and a good singer—Mahaprabhu always cried when Mukunda sang. One day, Mahaprabhu was distributing mercy to everybody—whoever was near Him, Mahaprabhu said their names, and whoever was far, Mahaprabhu said their names too, but He did not say Mukunda's name. Sivas Pandit asked Mahaprabhu, "Prabhu, You are saying everybody's names, but why do You not say the name of one devotee who is near You, who is a good singer? Why do You not say Mukunda's name?" Mahaprabhu said, "I will not say his name because he mixes with bad people."

Hearing what Mahaprabhu said to Srivas Pandit, Mukunda became very upset and unhappy. He thought, "What is my life for? I always sing for Mahaprabhu, I chant for Mahaprabhu, I love Mahaprabhu so much, but Mahaprabhu does not give mercy to me! Then I better commit suicide!" He decided to commit suicide, but before doing it, he wanted to ask Mahaprabhu one question. Mukunda was afraid to come in front of Mahaprabhu, so he asked Srivas Pandit, "Prabhu, can you ask Mahaprabhu? I want to commit suicide, will I get His mercy later? Will I get His mercy any time in future?" Srivas Pandit went to Mahaprabhu and asked Mahaprabhu, "Prabhu, Mukunda wants to die... Will he get Your mercy any time?" Mahaprabhu answered, "Yes, he will get My mercy, but not now—he will get it after one crore of lives (ten million lives)."

Hearing this, Mukunda began to jump and laugh, "I will get mercy! I will get mercy!" Mahaprabhu was surprised to see him jump and laugh, He called Mukunda and said, "Mukunda, I did not know you had so much faith! You do not have to wait for a crore of lives, you will get mercy now!"

We all should have such kind of faith—such faith should come to us.

Simple. Sincere. Sufficient.
'Srila Prabhupad said, 'Do not read so many books, and do not practise so many things.' Simple books are sufficient. You can recite, sing, and memorise daily songs, and practise every day.'
