Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhu:
The All-Rounder

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
9 September 2011

You know that Mahaprabhu gave charge of His line to Srila Rupa Goswami. Srila Rupa Goswami Prabhu had a disciple and a nephew by family relation called Jiva Goswami Prabhu. Today is his appearance day (avirbhav). Srila Jiva Goswami Prabhu lived in Radha Damodar temple (our temple in Vrindavan is right next to it).

Today, a temple cannot run with just one-two devotees. Now, one man cooks, another one does puja, another one cleans, another one makes garlands, and so on, but Jiva Goswami Prabhu did everything alone—he cooked, did puja, cleaned the temple, brought water from the Yamuna (there was no tap water or well at that time), and also did personal service to his Guru (gave oil massage, etc.). He was busy with his service from morning to night, and did everything alone.

Once, Rupa Goswami wrote a sloka and when a senior devotee, whom he regarded as his Guru, came to him, he thought that what Rupa Goswami had written was a little wrong and he corrected him. Jiva Goswami heard it and thought, "No, this is not right. What he is saying is actually not correct." Later, he went to the Yamuna and met that devotee there. He said to him, "Oh, you did wrong, what my Guru had written is correct." He explained to him why, and the devotee came back to Rupa Goswami to apologise.

Rupa Goswami chastised Jiva Goswami, "Now you are teaching my Guru?! It is not right, it is an offence. You cannot stay in Vrindavan—you do not have the qualification to stay here. You must leave..."

Jiva Goswami left, and later Sanatan Goswami brought him back. This is how Rupa Goswami Prabhu was teaching his disciple...

Simple. Sincere. Sufficient.
'Srila Prabhupad said, 'Do not read so many books, and do not practise so many things.' Simple books are sufficient. You can recite, sing, and memorise daily songs, and practise every day.'

'I carefully offer my obeisance to Sri Guru's lotus feet, which are the sole abode of devotion. O brother! By his mercy we cross over this world and reach Krishna.'

If even for a moment you think of something that is not related to Krishna—if your mind goes to another place—that is bad for you.
