(2/4) Mahaprabhu's Anger

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Bengali evening class in Sri Puri Dham
9 July 2018, part 2

You have heard today about Srila Haridas Thakur. What did Srila Haridas Thakur ask Mahaprabhu for? Mahaprabhu asked him, 'Haridas, what has happened to you? What is your disease?' Do you remember what Srila Haridas Thakur replied? He said, 'Asustha naya mora sarira, asustha haya mora mana (অসুস্থ নয় মোর শরীর, অসুস্থ হয় মোর মন): my body is not sick; it is my mind that is sick.' Mind always goes this side, that side, and it does not want to serve the Lord. That is why Srila Haridas Thakur said, 'I am not sick. My mind is sick.' Then, Srila Haridas Thakur asked Mahaprabhu for three things, 'I want to keep Your holy lotus feel in my heart, I want to behold Your lotus face with my two eyes, and I want to chant "Sri Krishna Chaitanya, Sri Krishna Chaitanya, Sri Krishna Chaitanya" with my mouth.'

Have you heard this today? You must listen to these things very carefully, with your heart. I am telling you these things again and again.

Srila Haridas Thakur left his body, chanting, 'Sri Krishna Chaitanya'. Mahaprabhu was chanting the Holy Name and told all the devotees to circumambulate Srila Haridas Thakur's body. Mahaprabhu massaged Srila Haridas Thakur's body with His own hands and later bathed his body in the ocean. After that, Mahaprabhu said, 'This ocean has become a great place of pilgrimage (maha-tirtha)!' because the water that had washed Haridas Thakur's holy feet and body is in that ocean now.

We are very fortunate to have come here. Mahaprabhu left Nabadwip and stayed here in Puri. If it is not raining tomorrow, we will go to the house where He stayed.

Devotee: What does 'Sri Krishna Chaitanya' mean?

This is Mahaprabhu's name. When Mahaprabhu took sannyas, this is the name Keshav Bharati gave Him. We always chant this name in kirtans also, 'Sri Krishna Chaitanya Prabhu Nityananda...' So, Sri Krishna Chaitanya means Mahaprabhu. Before that, He was known as Vishvambhar, Nimai.

[To a devotee in the audience] Where are you from?

Devotee: Nabadwip.

I have a question for you. You were born, grew up, became old and will later die in Nabadwip, so I want to ask you something. I went to a shop the other day in Tarakeshwar, and when I was in the store, somebody was criticising the shopkeeper. I told him, 'Stop it. I am standing here, so do not criticise anyone.' Shopkeepers often criticise each other to get customers – they will say, 'Oh, if you buy potato at that shop over there, half the sack you buy will be rotten potato.' I told that man not to do this – I cannot tolerate it when people criticise others. Anyhow, my question to you is this: Mahaprabhu distributed transcendental love to everyone, but how many times did Mahaprabhu become angry and why?

Devotee: You please tell it.

Oh, you do not know it, so you want me to tell it? Mahaprabhu got angry four times. You can also say five times, but that time was not so much, it happened in His childhood.

One of the times when Mahaprabhu was angry was when He cried chanting the names of gopis and somebody criticised Him. Madhavendra Puri also was criticised for that. Madhavendra Puri had two prominent disciples, Ishwar Puri and Ramachandra Puri. One day, Madhavendra Puri was reciting this verse and crying:

অয়ি দীনদয়ার্দ্র নাথ হে
মথুরানাথ কদাবলোক্যসে ।
হৃদয়ং ত্বদলোককাতরং
দয়িত ভ্রাম্যতি কিং করোম্যহম্ ॥

ayi dina-dayardra natha he
mathura-natha kadavalokyase
hrdayam tvad-aloka-kataram
dayita bhramyati kim karomy aham

'O gentle-hearted Lord, ever-gracious upon the destitute, O Lord of Mathura, when shall I see You again? In Your absence my broken heart trembles. Beloved! what shall I do now?'

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, 2.4.197)

He lamented, 'Where are you, my Lord? You have given Your darshan once, but I cannot see You again! Where are You?' At this time, Ramachandra Puri came to him and said, 'You are situated in brahma-jnana, why are you saying these things? Why are you being emotional?' Madhavendra Puri became angry and told him, 'Go away, sinner!' Who can understand these things? Whom will you tell these things?...

So, when Jagai and Madhai hit Nityananda Prabhu, Mahaprabhu was extremely unhappy and became angry – He went to that place together with Sudarshan Chakra! That was one time He got angry. Another time, as I have mentioned, He was chanting the names of gopis when somebody came and criticised Him, 'Why are You chanting their names?' Mahaprabhu became angry to hear this. The third time was when Chad Kazi broke a mridanga. And the fourth time Mahaprabhu became angry was when the rules of propriety were broken. Where did it happen? Here in Puri. Who broke those rules? Jagadananda Pandit.

Jagadananda Pandit is a great and very dear devotee of Mahaprabhu. We will go to his house tomorrow, I will show it to you. It is not far from here. One time, many devotees came for Ratha Yatra, just like you have come here now too. The Ratha Yatra festival had finished and the chariots had returned to the temple. Generally, Mahaprabhu told Srila Rupa Goswami and Srila Sanatan Goswami to stay in Vrindavan. They were always sad because they could not stay with Mahaprabhu all the time, so Mahaprabhu told them to come to Puri at least once a year, for Ratha Yatra. Sanatan Goswami would come here walking barefoot on scorching sand – his feet would be covered with blisters. He did not come the direct way through Puri because he considered himself untouchable and did not want anybody on the way to touch his body, so he would take a roundabout way, walking on the sand. So, that time, when the chariots had already returned to the temple and the festival finished, Sanatan Goswami asked Jagadananda Pandit, 'You all are very fortunate because you can always stay with the Lord, but we are staying so far... Ratha Yatra has finished, and the chariots have returned, so we have to return to Vrindavan...' Jagadananda Pandit replied to that, 'Yes, go, go!' That was the time when he broke the rules of propriety because he had no right to say this. Mahaprabhu was the host, and Jagadananda Pandit, no matter how much service he did, had no right to tell other devotees to leave. After that, Sanatan Goswami came to Mahaprabhu and tearfully told him, 'It is time for me to go back, and Jagadananda Pandit also says so...' Mahaprabhu was surprised, 'Jagadananda said that?! Bring him here!' Devotees called him, and he sat before Mahaprabhu together with Sanatan Goswami. Then, Mahaprabhu angrily chastised Jagadananda Pandit, 'You were born only yesterday, how dare you say such things! Do you even know who Sanatan Goswami is?! Even I respect him! And you tell him to leave?!' Hearing this, Jagadananda Pandit lowered his head, and Sanatan Goswami lowered his head and began to cry. Jagadananda Pandit was chastised, but who was crying? Sanatan Goswami! Remember this. Sanatan Goswami told Mahaprabhu, 'Prabhu, You always give me bitter things (You always praise me), but You give sweet things to him (You chastise him)... You have never given such sweet things to me. Jagadananda Pandit is so fortunate because You can chastise Him! But I am not fortunate because You have never chastised me...'

Saltamami
'If you lose your capital every day, you will eventually have a zero balance, and the next day it will be -1, then -2—then it will be lost for your life. You have got some sukriti, that is all right, but every day you must earn more through your service.'

We must realise everything, we must practise our own spiritual life properly, and pray to the feet of Guru, Vaishnavs sincerely, not pretending or showing off.
