Empowering Srila Rupa Goswami

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Sri Nabadwip Dham, Samadhi-mandir class
14 June 2015

[His Divine Grace is reading from Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Madhya-lila, chapter 19:]

Kavi Karnapur wrote in his book that all places of Radha-Krishna's Pastimes had been lost and Mahaprabhu sent Rupa Goswami and Sanatan Goswami to discover these places:

kalena vrndavana-keli-varta
lupteti tam khyapayitum visisya
krpamrtenabhisisecha devas
tatraiva rupam cha sanatanam cha

"In the course of time, the transcendental news of Krishna's pastimes in Vrindavan was almost lost. To enunciate explicitly those transcendental pastimes, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu empowered Srila Rupa Goswami and Sanatan Goswami with the nectar of His mercy to carry out this work in Vrindavan." [119]

Krishna left everything, left all gopis, and went to Dvaraka, and even there He was not attached to the family life. So, when Mahaprabhu saw Rupa Goswami and Anupam Goswami, He gave them some service—He sent them to discover all those lost places. Actually, Mahaprabhu gave some mercy to Rupa Goswami and Sanatan Goswami and through them He discovered all the lost places Himself.

priya-svarupe dayita-svarupe
prema-svarupe sahajabhirupe
nijanurupe prabhur eka-rupe
tatana rupe sva-vilasa-rupe

"Whatever Mahaprabhu had, whatever ecstasy He had (nijer priya svarupa, nijer prema svarupa, dayita svarupa) He gave everything to Rupa Goswami—Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Lord Himself, manifested everything through Rupa Goswami." [121]

ei-mata karnapura likhe sthane-sthane
prabhu krpa kaila yaichhe rupa-sanatane

In this way Kavi Karnapur wrote in different places how Mahaprabhu gave mercy to Srila Rupa Goswami and Srila Sanatan Goswami. [122]

mahaprabhura yata bada bada bhakta matra
rupa-sanatana—sabara krpa-gaurava-patra [123]

Srila Rupa Goswami and Sanatana Goswami were the objects of love and honour for all the great devotees of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. [123]

"There were so many great devotees of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and they all gave mercy to Rupa and Sanatan."

keha yadi dese yaya dekhi' vrndavana
tanre prasna karena prabhura parisada-gana

If someone returned to their country after seeing Vrindavan, the associates of the Lord would ask them questions. [124]

"kaha,—tahan kaichhe rahe rupa-sanatana?
kaichhe rahe, kaichhe vairagya, kaichhe bhojana?

"Tell us, how are Rupa and Sanatan doing in Vrindavan? What are they doing? What is their renunciation like? What are they eating?" [125]

Whenever somebody went to Vrindavan, devotees would then ask them, "Did you see Sanatan Goswami? Did you see Rupa Goswami? How are they? What are they doing? What kind of prasadam are they taking? How are they doing their bhajan? Did you meet them?" Mahaprabhu and the devotees would ask them about everything.

kaichhe asta-prahara karena sri-krsna-bhajana?"
tabe prasamsiya kahe sei bhakta-gana

"How do Rupa and Sanatan engage in devotional service twenty-four hours daily?" And the person who had returned from Vrindavan would praise Srila Rupa Goswami and Sanatan Goswami. [126]

Devotees would praise and glorify Rupa and Sanatan to Mahaprabhu so much—they would tell how renounced Rupa and Sanatan are, how much austerity they undergo, and how much they sacrifice for the service to the Lord. Rupa and Sanatan always, twenty-four hours a day (asta-prahar), did service.

"aniketa dunhe, vane yata vrksa-gana
eka eka vrksera tale eka eka ratri sayana

"The two brothers live under trees—they stay one night under one tree and the next night under another. [127]

There are so many trees in Vrindavan and Rupa and Sanatan stayed one night under one tree, another night under another tree. This is how they lived and spent their life—they did not think about A/C...

'vipra-grhe' sthula-bhiksa, kahan madhu-kari
suska ruti-chana chivaya bhoga parihari'

"Srila Rupa and Sanatan Goswami beg a little food from the houses of brahmanas and sometimes they beg and keep the collected food for several days. Giving up all material enjoyment, they take only some dry bread and chickpeas. [128]

Sometimes they would take prasadam at some house, sometimes they went collecting, begging for some rice and dahl, and sometimes they would take dry chapati and chana (chickpea). This is what they ate.

karonya-matra hate, kantha chhinda, bahirvasa
krsna-katha, krsna-nama, nartana-ullasa

"They carry only waterpots and wear torn quilts and clothes. They always discuss Krishna, chant the Names of Krishna and dance with great joy. [129]

asta-prahara krsna-bhajana, chari danda sayane
nama-sankirtane seha nahe kona dine

"They spend twenty-four hours a day in service of Krishna and rest for one and a half hours. Not a single day passes without Nama sankirtan. [130]

They carried a kamandal (a waterpot), wore a torn quilt (kantha) and torn clothes (bahirvas), and always spoke Krishna-katha, always chanted Krishna Nam. They were always very happy; they spent all their time doing Krishna bhajan only. In their life, they slept only for one and a half hours (chadi danda). Nama-sankirtane seha nahe kona dine: a day did not pass in their life without chanting the Holy Name.

kabhu bhakti-rasa-sastra karaye likhana
chaitanya-katha sune, kare chaitanya-chintana"

"Sometimes they write scriptures about devotional service. They listen about Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and spend their time thinking about the Lord." [131]

They also composed books, the sastra (scriptures), composed slokas. They did not listen to any gossiping, only always listened to Chaitanya-katha; and they always thought about Chaitanya.

ei-katha suni' mahantera maha-sukha haya
chaitanyera krpa yanhe, tanhe ki vismaya? [132]

Devotees would tell all this about Rupa and Sanatan to Mahaprabhu, and Mahaprabhu was very happy to hear it. How is it possible for a human body to live like this? It is actually not surprising. Chaitanyera krpa yanhe: it is possible because they have got mercy from Chaitanya; without mercy from Chaitanya it is impossible to be like this.

chaitanyera krpa rupa likhiyachhena apane
rasamrta-sindhu-granthera mangalacharane

Srila Rupa Goswami has personally spoken about the mercy of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in Mangalacharana, auspicious introduction, in his book Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. [133]

Rupa Goswami composed Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. This book is impossible for a human body, a conditioned jiva soul to compose. How did it become possible for Rupa Goswami to write it? Because he got mercy from Chaitanya!

Rupa Goswami told,

hrdi yasya preranaya pravartito 'ham varaka-rupo 'pi
tasya hareh pada-kamalam vande chaitanya-devasya

"Although I am the lowest of men and have no knowledge, the inspiration to write transcendental literatures about devotional service has been mercifully bestowed upon me. Therefore I am offering my obeisances at the lotus feet of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who has given me the chance to write these books." [134]

"I am a kandal (কাঙ্গাল), a pauper and a beggar." What did he beg for? He did not beg for money! He said, "I am a beggar for mercy. I am a beggar for mercy of Krishna: আমি কৃষ্ণ-প্রেমের ভিখারি, কৃষ্ণ-প্রেমের কাঙ্গালী, ami Krsna-premer bhikhari, Krsna-premer kangali—I am worshipping His lotus feet and begging for His feet dust. I am a kandal, a pauper, yet I am trying to compose this book—it is impossible to do it without mercy of Mahaprabhu, that is why I am always praying to His lotus feet and begging for the feet dust of His lotus feet." Rupa Goswami wrote this sloka...

Gundicha Marjan: 'Let Jagannath Come to My House'
'Another meaning of Gundicha marjan is cleaning the heart, and Mahaprabhu Himself was showing how to do it. At first He swept, then poured water and then with His own cloth, uttariya, He washed the temple. He was showing how thoroughly you must clean your heart..'
