Root of Anartha

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Speaking online to devotees in London
28 July 2018, part 3

Where is ***?

—He is working today.

Very bad news. He is always working, he is not getting time to give class...

Actually, I had much hope for him, I thought I would keep him here, but it was my mistake that I had sent him back too quickly. He knows Krishna consciousness, he wants to give lectures, and I have seen that he has some good qualification, but he is now working most of the time, earning some money... But artha anarther mul (অর্থ অনর্থের মূল)—money brings anartha (ruin, unwanted and inauspicious habits). Money is the root of anartha. It is said so in the scriptures.

Chaitanya-charitamrita says:

কৃষ্ণ যদি ছুটে ভক্তে ভুক্তি মুক্তি দিয়া ।
কভু ভক্তি না দেন রাখেন লুকাইয়া ॥

krsna yadi chhute bhakte bhukti mukti diya
kabhu prema-bhakti na dena rakhena lukaiya

"If you ask Krishna for anything except devotion, He can give you those things—bhukti, mukti, liberation, and so on—but He will hide devotion from you. You will not get devotion."

(Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita, Adi-lila, 8.18)

You know what it means, you can explain it better than me.

If you run behind money, wealth, property, ladies, Krishna will give you property, wealth, etc., but ultimately He will remove devotion from you—you will lose devotion. That is the main thing.

What I will do, I will do that every day. 'I am only doing today, next day I am not doing'—this is not devotion, this is emotion.

Gurudev! krpa-bindu diya
'Gurudev, give this servant a drop of your mercy, and make me more humble than a blade of grass.'
গুরুদেব! কৃপাবিন্দু দিয়া

Everybody is saying, 'Gurudev, Gurudev,' but how many percent are following
Gurudev's instruction?

"HUMILITY, TOLERANCE, GIVING HONOUR TO OTHERS | HUMILITY, TOLERANCE, GIVING HONOUR TO OTHERS"
