Damodarastakam
His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
25 October 2018, Dum Dum Park, part 2
We sing Damodarastakam,
namamisvaram sach-chid-ananda rupam
lasat-kundalam gokule bhrajamanam
yasoda-bhiyolukhalad dhavamanam
paramrstam atyantato drutya gopya [1]
"I offer my humble obeisance to the Supreme Lord, whose form is the
embodiment of eternal existence, knowledge, and bliss, whose shark-shaped
earrings are swinging to and fro, who is beautifully shining in the divine
realm of Gokul, who [after breaking the pot of yogurt that his mother had
been churning into butter and stealing butter] is running quickly from the
wooden mortar in fear of Mother Yasoda, who ran faster than Him and caught
Him."
rudantam muhur netra-yugmam mrjantam
karambhoja-yugmena satanka-netram
muhuh svasa-kampa-trirekhanka-kanthasthita-
graivam damodaram bhakti-baddham [2]
"[Seeing a stick in His mother's hand,] He is crying and rubbing His eyes
with His two lotus hands. His eyes are filled with fear, and the necklace of
pearls around His neck, which is marked with three lines like a conchshell,
is shaking because of His sobs. I offer my humble obeisance to this Supreme
Lord, Sri Damodar, whose belly is bound with the rope of His mother's pure
love"
|
That is a very important song in our spiritual life. We pray,
namo deva damodarananta visno
prasida prabho duhkha-jalabdhi-magnam
krpa-drsti-vrstyati-dinam batanugrhanesa
mam ajnam edhy aksi-drsyah [6]
"O Supreme Lord, I offer my obeisances unto You. O Damodar! O Ananta! O
Visnu! O Master! Dear Lord, please be merciful to me. Shower Your glance of
mercy upon me and deliver this poor ignorant fool who is immersed in an ocean
of worldly sorrows. Please become visible to my eyes."

You know that when Krishna's mother became very tired [trying to tie Krishna
with a rope that always appeared to be two fingers too short], Krishna
thought, "Oh, My Mother has become tired, she has got so much austerity," and
He Himself allowed her to bind Him with the rope.
After that, Mother Yasoda tied Krishna to an ulukhal (a wooden mortar,
a kind of very heavy wood) and returned to the boiling milk, but Krishna
started crawling around with the mortar behind His back. Krishna carries the
entire universe, so do you think He cannot carry just one piece of wood? Do
you think it is impossible? Suddenly, Krishna appeared in a place a little
far from His home. [We go to that place every year; it is called the
dam-bandhan-lila place, and the Yamal-Arjuna trees are there.]
You know that Kuver had sons, Manigriv and Nalakuvar, and these two sons had
a very big ego, being extremely proud of their property and wealth. They did
not care about anybody. One day, they were playing in a river with completely
naked ladies when suddenly Narad Muni appeared walking past that place.
Seeing Narad Muni, the ladies covered their bodies, but Kuver's sons did not
care—they did not care who Narad is or who was going past. As the result,
Narad Muni cursed the two proud sons of Kuver and said that the next life
they would become trees. Manigriv and Nalakuvar were shocked. They apologised
to Narad Muni, and Narad Muni said, "When Krishna appears in Dvapar-yuga, He
will stay in Gokul Mahavan. He will rescue you from this condition, and you
will get your previous body back." That is why it is written in
Damodarastakam:
kuveratmajau baddha-murttyaiva yadvat
tvaya mochitau bhakti-bhajau krtau cha
tatha prema-bhaktim svakam me prayachchha
na mokse graho me 'sti damodareha [7]
"O Lord Damodar! As a baby tied with a rope to a wooden grinding mortar, You
relieved the two sons of Kuver from the curse of Narad, and they became Your
great devotees. In the same way, please bestow upon me transcendental love
for You. This is all I am longing for; I have no desire for any
liberation."

Kuver's sons were suffering so much in the tree bodies, but Krishna is very
merciful—He removed their bondage.
So, when Krishna was crawling around, He came to a place where two trees
stood. He crawled between the trees, but the wooden mortar that He was tied
to got stuck between the trees, Krishna pulled the mortar and the trees
immediately fell down. There were no clouds, nothing—the trees fell just like
that; and Nanda Gopal simply looked behind and smiled. Hearing a great thud,
many people came to the place where it had come from. They were astonished,
"What has happened? How did these two big trees fall down?!” Both trees were
lying on the ground. Krishna was there too. When Nanda Maharaj came there, he
was very worried, "What has happened? Is my son Krishna all right?" Nanda
Maharaj later had a little quarrel with Mother Yasoda; he chastised her, "Why
did you tie my son? What would you do if something had happened?" I even
heard that he had not talked to Mother Yasoda for three months after that
incident. Such are Krishna's pastimes, Krishna's lila.
kuveratmajau baddha-murttyaiva yadvat
tvaya mochitau bhakti-bhajau krtau cha
tatha prema-bhaktim svakam me prayachchha
na mokse graho me 'sti damodareha [7]
"O Lord Damodar! As a baby tied with a rope to a wooden grinding mortar, You
relieved the two sons of Kuver from the curse of Narad, and they became Your
great devotees. In the same way, please bestow upon me transcendental love
for You. This is all I am longing for; I have no desire for any
liberation."
namas te 'stu damne sphurad-dipti-dhamne
tvadiyodarayatha visvasya dhamne
namo radhikayai tvadiya-priyayai
namo 'nanta-lilaya devaya tubhyam [8]
"O Lord Damodar! I first offer my obeisance to the brilliantly effulgent rope
which binds Your belly. Then, I offer my obeisance to Your belly, which is
the abode of the entire universe. I humbly bow down to Your most beloved
Srimati Radharani, and I offer all obeisances to You, the Supreme Lord, who
displays unlimited pastimes."
|
This song Damodarastakam about the pastimes of the Lord is written by
Satyavrata Muni, and we sing it every Kartik month.
Radharani's devotion, Vraja gopis' devotion is the highest conception,
the highest devotion. Krishna Himself wants the foot dust of Vraja
gopis—He took their foot dust on His head! Then you can understand
that we cannot consider ourselves to be even their foot dust.
We also sing 'Radhe jaya jaya madhava daite' song composed by Srila
Rupa Goswami:
radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite
gokula-taruni-mandala-mahite
"Glory to Radha, the beloved of Madhava! All the young girls of Gokula,
beautiful like Laksmi Devi, are charmed to see Your exquisite beauty."
damodara-rati-varddhana-vese
hari-niskuta-vrnda-vipinese
"You are always decorated with many beautiful garments and scented flowers
and is irresistible to Damodar. Your Pastimes with Krishna are going on
eternally in the groves of Sri Vrindavan Dham."
vrsabhanudadhi-nava-sasi-lekhe
lalita-sakhi guna-ramita-visakhe
"Just as the moon is said to have appeared from the ocean, so have You
arisen from the ocean of Sri Vrisabhanu Maharaj. You are a friend of Lalita
and the joy of Visakha."
karunam kuru mayi karuna-bharite
sanaka-sanatana-varnita-charite
"All liberated devotees, the highly qualified mukta-purusa devotees, such as
Sanaka and Sanatan, always glorify the abode of Krishna and His devotees, and
particularly the Supreme Servitor of Krishna, Srimati Radharani. O merciful
Srimati Radharani! Please bestow Your mercy on me."

The Meaning of Sahajiya
|
'We cook to please Krishna, to make Krishna happy. It is not like you are doing some
nonsense and think you are making Krishna happy. If you use Krishna's name, use
Gurudev's name, but actually you cook and eat it yourself without offering it to
Guru, Krishna, it is sahajiya.'
|
Samsara-davanala |
'I offer my obeisance unto the lotus feet of Sri Guru, who is said by all the scriptures to be the Lord Himself, and considered to be so by the sadhus, yet is the Lord's beloved devotee.'
