(10/17) Genuine Gurus' Mission His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
We can attain such great things (we can come to the holy feet of Govinda!), but we are not trying to attain anything because cannot give up small things. You can see, perhaps, a hundred and fifty people sitting here, but among them, only five–six people have taken initiation... If I were to say now, 'Eat fish, eat meat, mix with women, do anything you like,' a hundred people would take initiation right away. But I cannot give you initiation like that because it will not bring you any benefit. I will give you one example. Suppose you have some health issue, so you come to a doctor. The doctor sends you for a blood test, and when the result comes, he sees that you have diabetes. The doctor says to you, 'Sir, do not eat any sweets or potatoes. I am also prescribing some medication, take it every day.' If you say, 'Oh, you are telling me to give up eating sweets, but I always eat five–ten sweets every day, I cannot live without sweets. Please just prescribe some more medicine and let me eat sweets.' If the doctor is good – if the doctor loves you and sincerely wants to save you – he will say, 'I do not need a patient like you! If you cannot change your diet, you will not get well and die sooner. I do not want to have a patient like you.' But if the doctor is greedy for money (if the doctors love money, not you), he will think, 'If I prohibit this man to eat sweets, he will go to another doctor and I will lose money. I would rather tell him to eat anything he wants, and he can come to see me in a month – we will do another blood test, and if his sugar is high, I will just increase the medication.' So, genuine sadhus love you and come to hijack you. Remember that I am coming here to hijack you! I do not come to hijack your money, dal, rice or potato. I come to take away the souls fallen into material bondage and engage them in the service to Lord Govinda. This is what real hijacking is. Bona fide gurus do not want your money, wealth, property, houses, cars, etc. There are many people who hanker for all these things, but genuine gurus do not do that. They do not even run after pratistha – instead, pratistha runs after them. 'i>Vaisnavi pratistha tate kara nistha (বৈষ্ণবী প্রতিষ্ঠা তাতে কর নিষ্ঠা). Firmly establish yourself as a servant of the Lord.' Even Sivji Maharaj said to Parvati Devi, 'O Devi Paravati! There are many vitta-harankari gurus in this world (those who steal your wealth, money, etc.), but there are very few santap-harankari gurus (spiritual teachers who will "rob" you of your material miseries).' Who is a guru? Who can become a guru? 'Kanak, kamini, pratistha-baghini chhadiyachhe yare sei ta vaisnava (কনক-কামিনী প্রতিষ্ঠা-বাঘিনী ছাড়িয়াছে যারে সেই ত বৈষ্ণব). Vaishnavs are those who give up money, women and fame the tigress.' Srila Prabhupad said, 'What is it that cannot be given up even after having given up everything? One cannot give up pratistha (name and fame).' This pratistha means, 'I have become a guru!', 'I have become a Vaishnav!', 'I have become a sadhu!', 'I have become a genuine Vaishnav!', 'I have become a devotee of Krishna.' This is ego, and it is not good to be like that. It is something that is impossible to give up, but it must be given up. How? We must realise, 'No, if I can become just a servant, it would be good. I do not need to become a devotee of Krishna – if I can become a servant of His devotee, it is sufficient.' We are trying to become servants of Krishna's devotees. We must remember this. It is described in the scriptures who is a guru. If somebody cannot save you from the jaws of death, this person can never become a guru. Saving from the 'jaws of death' means to save your soul from the necessity to again and again become born in various bodies. So, if somebody cannot save you from repeated births and deaths, this person can never be a guru. This is what Mahaprabhu came to say to this world, and this is what we come to tell you. Please think about all these things carefully, then you will understand what we are trying to say.
