(10/11) Accept Guidance

Why did Srila Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj open Sri Chaitanya Saraswat Math? Why did he establish this temple? For Hari-seva (service to the Lord), not for Hari-bhoga (exploiting or enjoying with the Lord). How does one get the right to serve the Lord? I wrote about it in Guidance, Volume 3. Krishna belongs to Radharani, and Radharani is non-different from Sri Gurupadpadma. So, if we take shelter in Sri Gurupadpadma and serve him with chaste submission, then we will get the right to serve Krishna. It is necessary to genuinely take shelter. Many of us, instead of taking shelter in Sri Gurupadpadma, only pretend to have taken shelter. As the result of that, instead of becoming servants of our guru (guru-sevi), we start to exploit our guru (become guru-bhogi) or we end up rejecting our guru (become guru-tyagi).

We often turn the Lord into our menial servant or a bribe-taker. If you want to practise real Krishna consciousness, you must take shelter of bona fide guru and serve under his guidance, then you will get supreme benefit; otherwise, all we will reap is offence – we will only be practising Maya consciousness. Always remember this.

It is impossible to chant the transcendental Holy Name of Lord Krishna unless all your unwanted elements are removed. If you commit offences, then even if you chant millions of Holy Names, you will not get the treasure of divine love for Krishna. Have you heard about this? Srila Sridhar Maharaj told it. At the same time, it is also said that even if you still have some unwanted elements within you, but if you sincerely chant Gaura-Nityananda's Holy Names, then all unwanted elements will go away. So, on the one hand, you cannot chant Lord Krishna's Holy Name unless you become pure; on the other hand, you can chant Gaura-Nityananda's Holy Name even if you are not pure – if you do that, all unwanted elements will be removed from you, then you have taste for chanting Lord's Krishna Holy Names. You all know the kirtan 'Nitai Chaitanya bale nachre amara mana', where it is said:

অপরাধ দূরে যাবে, পাবে প্রম ধন
(তখন) কৃষ্ণনামে রুচি হ’েব, ঘুচিবে বন্ধন ॥
অনায়াসে সফল হ’েব জীবের জীবন
(গৌর-কৃপা হ’েল হে)
(শেষে) বৃন্দাবনে রাধাশ্যামের পাবে দরশন ॥

aparadha dure yabe, pabe prema dhan'
(takhan) krsna-name ruchi ha'be, ghuchibe bandhan'
anayase saphal' ha'be jivera jivan'
(gaura-krpa ha'le he)
(sese) vrndavane radha-syamer' pabe darasan'

'Your offences will go away, and you will get transcendental love for the Lord! (Then,) you will get taste for Krishna's Name and your bondage will be destroyed. (Then,) your life will be easily successful! (If you get Gaura's mercy,) (in the end,) you will behold Radha-Shyam in Vrindavan.'

This is the same idea that I have just explained to you. On the one hand, you cannot chant Lord Krishna's Holy Name unless you become pure; on the other hand, you can chant Gaura-Nityananda's Holy Name even if you are not pure – if you do that, all unwanted elements will be removed from you, then you have taste for chanting Lord's Krishna Holy Names. Always remember this. These are Srila Sridhar Maharaj's words. I have written it here in Guidance 3.
