(1/5) Purity Comes From Within

His Divine Grace Om Vishnupad
Srila Bhakti Nirmal Acharya Maharaj
Preaching programme in Hooghly district,
28 February 2019, noon, part 1
Translated from Bengali

om ajnana-timirandhasya jnananjana-salakaya
chaksur unmilitam yena tasmai sri-gurave namah

'I offer my obeisance to Sri Guru who has opened my eyes, rescuing me from the illusory darkness of ignorance by applying the potent kajal of knowledge upon my eyes.'

gurvvabhista-supurakam guru-ganair asisa-sambhusitam
chintyachintya-samasta-veda-nipunam sri-rupa-panthanugam
govindabhidham ujjvalam vara-tanum bhakty anvitam-sundaram
vande visva-gurun cha divya-bhagavat-premno hi bija-pradam

'I offer my obeisance to him who perfectly fulfils his Gurudev's most cherished desires; who is fully adorned with the blessings of his Gurudev's associates; who is expert in all conceivable and inconceivable aspects of Vedic knowledge; who is the pre-eminent follower of Srila Rupa Goswami Prabhu's line; who is known as "Govinda" (Srila Bhakti Sundar Govinda Dev-Goswami Maharaj); whose beautiful, effulgent, exalted form is infused with pure devotion; who is the Guru of the entire universe; and who is the giver of the seed of divine love for the Supreme Lord.'

devam divya-tanum suchanda-vadanam balarka-chelanchitam
sandrananda-puram sad-eka-varanam vairagya-vidyambudhim
sri-siddhanta-nidhim subhakti-lasitam sarasvatanam varam
vande tam subhadam mad-eka-saranam nyasisvaram sridharam

'I worship Srila Bhakti Raksak Sridhar Dev-Goswami Maharaj, the bestower of all auspiciousness, my only shelter and the master of all renunciates. He is my Lord who possesses a transcendental form, whose face expression is very grave, who is clad in the holy clothes the colour of the newly risen sun. He is an abode of intense joy, the only genuine master whom one can accept and surrender to, and an ocean of divine knowledge of renunciation. He is a repository of holy scriptural teachings and pastimes of the highest devotion and a great follower of Srila Saraswati Thakur Prabhupad.'

vanchha-kalpatarubhyas cha krpa-sindhubhya eva cha
patitanam pavanebhyo vaisnavebhyo namo namah

'Again and again I offer obeisances to the Supreme Lord's devotees, who are saviours of the fallen, oceans of mercy and wish-fulfilling trees.'

Devotees have arranged this programme to hear about the Lord. Where can you find the Lord (Hari kothay)? In the discourses about Him (Hari-kathay). In which forest can you find the Lord (kon vane)? In the domain of service (sevane). We are present here today to speak and listen about the Lord. The Lord is present wherever His devotees speak about Him.

A bad day is not a cloudy day. What day is bad? The day when we do not get to hear anything about the Lord or when we do not get to speak about the Lord. The day when our fortune and fate are such that we do not get to hear anything about the Lord, when we cannot chant the Holy Names and glories of the Lord, such a day is bad for us.

So, we are very fortunate today to have got this opportunity to hear about the Lord in the association of sadhus and gurus and to chant the glories of the Lord in their association.

অসাধুসঙ্গে ভাই কৃষ্ণনাম নাহি হয় ।
নামাক্ষর বাহিরায় বটে তবু নাম কভু নয় ॥

asadhu-sange bhai krsna-nama nahi haya
namaksara bahiraya bate tabu nama kabhu naya

‘Brother, the Name of Krishna cannot be chanted in bad association: it may certainly sound like the letters of the Name, but it can never be the Name proper.’

(Sri Sri Prema-vivarta, Srila Jagadananda Pandit)

If you want to chant the Holy Name of the Lord, you have to live in the association of sadhus. Otherwise, the Holy Name does not come to the mouths of those who are covered with anarthas (unwanted or non-spiritual habits, evils). When you are covered with anarthas, you can chant the Holy Names of Nitia and Gaura – as you chant Their Names more and more, your anarthas will go away, then you will get taste for chanting the Holy Name of Lord Krishna. Always remember this. You will not feel taste for the Holy Name of Lord Krishna if you are full of anarthas. Until and unless we have material desires, we will not be able to attain anything.

আর কবে নিতাইচাঁদ করুণা করিবে ।
সংসার-বাসনা মোর কবে তুচ্ছ হ'বে ॥

ara kabe nitaichand karuna karibe
samsara-vasana mora kabe tuchha ha'be

'When will Nitaichand give me His mercy? When will my material desires become trifle?'

(Prarthana, Srila Narottam Das Thakur)

We must cry to Nitaichand, 'When will Nitaichand give me His mercy? When will my material desires become trifle?' When will all my material attachment and desires lose their grip on me? We must always keep this in mind. When will our minds become pure by chanting Nitai-Gaura's Names and glories?...

Do you know why we see others' faults? Because we cannot rectify our own minds. Until and unless our minds become pure and restrained, we will always continue looking for faults in others. By the influence of sadhus, gurus and Vaishnavs, through Hari-kirtan, whatever dirt and material desires we have in our minds and hearts will be removed. This dirt is the desire to enjoy with your eyes, tongue, nose, ears, skin, the desire for money, women and fame, lust, as well as lust, anger, greed, madness, illusion and envy. All these must always be given up.

anya-abhilasa chhadi', jnana-karma parihari',
kaya mane kariba bhajan
sadhu-sange krsna seva, na pujiba devi-deva,

'I will serve the Lord with my body and mind, giving up all other desires and pursuits of material benefit and knowledge. I will serve Lord Krishna in sadhus' association without worshipping any gods or goddesses – this is the ultimate way to attain devotion.'

(Srila Narottam Das Thakur)

It is not necessary to worship all gods and goddesses. If you only worship Krishna and His devotees, if you only worship Gaura-Nityananda, that is sufficient. Many people say, 'If you can worship Krishna and all other kinds of worship are automatically accomplished, then why is it necessary to worship Gaura? And if Gaura is Krishna, then if you worship Gaura, it is the same as worshipping Krishna – why worship Krishna then?' Only those who draw distinction between Gaura and Krishna say such things. Such people do not worship God – they worship lust and Maya. Even when people say that Gaura and Krishna are the same, it is also the same mentality of distinguishing between Them. Such people talk about whom you must serve and worship, Gaura or Krishna. This is what Srila Prabhupad says. Guidance 3 is coming out soon – read it, everything is there.

Sanatan-Dharma: Universal Religion
'Everything in this world is born and exists for the service to the Lord, and the sanatan-dharma (your religion) is to use everything for the service to the Lord. It is not only my religion, or your religion, everybody's religion should be one.'

Actually, we do not know what is good for us. We think we will get benefit in this way,
and we go that way, but then some problem comes.
